I heard the same stories and met similar women in the towns outside the US Army posts, where girls go to become juice girls and coffee hostesses. In two years, I met only one girl I am fairly positive never accepted money, food, or any other gift from a service member or Korean man outside of her coffee tips. And then, she she always talked about her family to me. Most of the women would at least accept offers for a meal after work or during the day before work. On the other extreme, there was the girl who stole her clients' money, but only the ones getting ready to ship out. She had steel curves, but her heart was black. She went right for the young ones, and most of us spent nights trying to run interference for unwitting soldiers.

And, speaking of the Political Spectrum scandal, if there are a minority of girls, like these hostesses and prostitutes, there are undoubtably legions of girls with more self-respect willing to accept favors of one kind or another just to ease their burdens. Its not deviancy, its simple economics.

BTW, Marmot in drag? Its a disgusting image, but Marmot just might make it work for a few Korean men after a night of soju and song. My wife said one client a night is fine. I guess that's why The Onion compared marriage with prostitution.

I wonder if those numbers are net of expenses (e.g., the 50-60% that the brothel owner/pimp gets) or gross?

Yeah, I saw many Korean-Chinese in Saipan, most of them work in the garment factories. My Korean friend said she instantly recognized their language as some form of Korean and she could pick up about half of it.
South Korean women have been working the Saipan-Guam deal for a long time, that's not a new development but maybe their numbers are increasing. It's easy to spot them on the flight from Incheon.

Deja vu
More than half of the rest have gone abroad to places like Japan, Saipan, Guam and Thailand. Brokers are apparently sending out girls in teams of four or five, charging them W10 million a person to go to Japan and W11 million for Saipan. According to one brothel owner, because the girls have to pay the brokers upfront, they rack up debts, so when they arrive at their destination, they often have their passport taken away and they live in semi-captivity. One girl who used to work in the Yongsan red light district complained, ?橫The brokers say that even abroad, we??d only have to service Koreans, but in fact, that??s not the case. Because I??m frightened about having to serve even foreigners in a place where I can??t communicate, I wouldn??t go willingly.??
Mmmm....where have we seen this before? Sounds exactly like the trafficking of Filipino and Russian girls in Korea. I guess it's time for Korea to get a taste of its own medicine.
