Newsis reported Sunday that Korea’ Netizens are apparently perturbed by a recently released Japanese porn video in which a Japanese guy (or guys) rides around Dongdaemun picking up comely young Korean ladies by flashing around sizable amounts of cash. Entitled “Winter Sonata: Hunting in Korea,” the description provided on the DVD case describes the producer’s little road trip to Korea — a land of “many beauties” and a “treasurehouse of undefiled virgins, the likes of which are extinct in Japan” — in which 13 tough-to-get amateurs trade their modesty for yen. In fact, according to Newsis, the video makes it seem as if Korean women will take it off and get down for money, and hence runs the danger of promoting a “mistaken understanding” of Korea and its womenfolk. Most Netizens are expressing their resentment, noting that the women on the video were not true amateurs, but ero actresses or prostitutes from the red-light districts. Other more “indiscreet” Netizens — or “Setizens” (Sex Netizens) — have praised the work and expressed anticipation.

LOL! Sounds like a typical observation on the uber-trendy urban bitches otherwise known as Manhattan women on Craigslist’s NYC Rant and Rave section. One time, there was a whole debate about ‘dinner whores’.
Granted, porn’s never been a reflection of “reality,” but given the disturbing tendency of Korean women to go after money in choosing a husband the video may not be so far off base. Is a woman - especially an educated one - who stays with an abusive, unfaithful husband simply for the financial amenities really that much different than the girls in that porn video, who happen to be prostitutes?

I think the orginal comment about the “Korean Wave” being reflected back is particulary telling. Once again Korea is thrust into the world, only not to like how the world interprets it back.
This is all simular to the debate about the “branding” of Korea a few weeks back in my view.
I was in FL in November (sweeps month) and a local TV station had a big expose about men driving around in a van offering money for sex on camera. Only after teasing the story for days, and a few minutes of breathless voiceover did they admit that the girls were pro’s and everything was set up ahead of time - including model releases.
The local sheriff said there was nothing he could do unless a citizen actually saw the activity going on within the darkly tinted windows of the van.
Those guys with the vans are geniuses (I assume it’s the ‘Bang Bus’ guys). As you saw the setup is ‘real’ enough to fool the ignorant, which makes the sheriff’s involvement all the more entertaining for the rest of us.
And as far as I can tell, they ain’t hurting for money. Go Capitalism!

Geishas aren’t prostitutes and aren’t there for sex, primarily. Prostitution is not hard to find in Japan. For some people, variety is the spice of life, and some Japanese find it easier to throw off their inhibitions when they’re not in Japan.
Imagine that for a tourist slogan:

The issue is not whether prostitution is a “good thing” or a “bad thing” — it’s just a “thing.” As a father I wouldn’t be too thrilled if my daughters became hookers, but I would similarly be disappointed if they ended up in any other dead-end occupations.
From a libertarian perspective, the question is — how can these busybodies justify denying low-skilled women (not all prostitutes are “low-skilled” but probably most are) the opportunity to earn a living offering a service which everybody wants? Nobody is clamoring to tell little boys that factory work, or coal mining, is degrading and unhealthy, and to deny them the opportunity to take those jobs. Undoubtedly, those two occupations are both degrading and unhealthy.

However that is at odds with the reality of prostituion (human trafficing, abuse, etc.). I suspect I will be lifting chairs and sofas in my head for some time.
My comment was not per se on the arguments for or agains, rather the tendancy here (observed in other contexts as well) to not only be extreme on an issue of culture by to be bellicose as well. Much of the times such hurts rather then helps the argument.
Dongdaemun does also attract a large percentage of girls from room salons… for the right price they’ll do almost anything (most of them anyway)

Late addition but I stumbled across a copy (the beauty of internet/email these days) and I must say, my expectations were smashed.
The cover is misleading. All girls refused to go any further when asked to do the “deed”.
The very last girl (the one pictured doing the “deed” on the cover) “seemed” to relent for the right price. But I am willing to bet that this one was a “setup” because the film did not show the act of the “hunting” that was done to attract the other girls beforehand, it virtually cut straight into the scene where she does the “deed”.
Had this sort of thing been tried in Japan I am willing to bet that they would have got over 50% success rate, compared to the 0% success rate they got in Korea. Bottom line is ordinary Korean girls cannot be “bought” with money.
Afterall, where else in the world apart from Japan can you see a TV show where audience full of Japanese girls cheer and clap while “contestants” from the audience have competitions partaking in fellatio with well-toned Japanese men on the stage.
