Doth President Roh protest too much?

Gary Schmitt of the Project for the New American Century seemed a bit taken back by the Roh administration’s reaction to Nick Eberstadt:

In the words of the great English playwright William Shakespeare, the president “doth protest too much.” Over the past week, while in Europe, President Roh and his government have been on a tear, harshly criticizing “certain vocal circles” in the United States who have called for a change in the U.S. and South Korea’s approach to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. Bizarrely, President Roh’s complaints appear to have been sparked by a single article, written by a mild-mannered scholar, and published in a magazine of limited circulation. Why the overreaction? Well, as the context of Shakespeare’s quote suggests, people “protest too much” precisely when their positions are least defensible and they have no obvious success to point to.

Read the rest on your own. Personally, I find this debate fascinating, but one thing the neocons (and Korean officials/press) need to remember is that while their ideas are quite influential, and quite possibly correct, they are not necessarily those of the White House. As commenter Spewer pointed out in a previous thread:

Before anyone get too excited about Eberstadt’s sly presumption to speak for USGOV, maybe they ought to take a look at the interview by the Korea Times with James Kelly, who actually does.

Overthrowing the regime through military means is not going to be an option put into play by the US unless the North absolutely forces such an action, which it won’t.

And SK and China and small add-ons by others will be enough to keep the NK regime alive.

The status quo will continue to be the status quo.

Agreed, but boy.. if even some of what Lankov says is true, things sure do seem to be changing up there.

I’m not holding my breath waiting for a collapse but when the first domino falls it will be short order till the last.

The only hopeful sign I see in the article is that the North Korean government seems to have decided it can’t afford to crush the black markets and other elements the people started making on their own. This seems to me to suggest the government believes it runs the risk of open revolt if it seeks to crush these measures done in utter desperation. Perhaps the regime believes the people will think, “Well, I’m going to die of starvation anyway, why not make it a short death by taking out my anger on the government — who has shown it can’t take care of me either.”
