Sometimes it amazes me what is considered sensitive and considerate. I read in the Korea Times today that the Anti-AIDS Federation is going to rename their recently named condom because it offended some Korean people who had the same name as the condom. The condom was named Aepil which could be translated as “the necessity in having sex?????????? and that there are ten people in Korea who have the same name (Aepil).

I can not imagine many companies taking such a response to strong opposition presented to them by ten people.

Right, it was the anti-AIDS org that responded that way, not companies.
About the 10 people though… it would be one thing to a car or something with something that could also be a personal name, but having your name eventually come to be used to mean “condom” would really make some people angry.
And the thing is, ?????? really does feel like it could be a ?´Œ??¤?????´ personal name, right? I mean if you called it ‘?????‘??? ?’????’ or something you wouldn’t have that problem.
I guess it depends on how valid your complaint is. Does anybody remember how fiercely the owners of various “Hitler”- and “Auschwitz”-themed restaurants have historically resisted complaints from whiny Jews and other foreigners?

You are all forgeting the funniest part of this all. There are 10 people in Korea actualy named “The Necessity for Having Sex”! This is almost a Dave Barry type of article!

Isn’t this name clash a funny example of the pervasive (marketed) use of konglish all around in Korea (and other countries as well)?
I don’t speak Korean, but it seems that the correct translation of “aepil” is “[sex] appeal”, right?
