Kimbob,

For the record I never said the statue has ever been vandalized. I said I have never seen anyone vandalize the statue. Generally people seem happy to have the statue there because every time I have been there people are hanging out having a good time and taking pictures of the statue.

why not stick him at the 38th parallel, where he wanted to drop all those cobalt-tipped a-bombs in order to create a 1000-year-long dmz?

McArthur gets all the props in the world for his leading of charges at the head of his troops during WWI and for his initial actions in Japan (before the great step back) and for the Incheon landing. It's the decision to go North (and going beyond the UN (oh wait, you hate it now that the US no longer contols it like it did then) mandate to liberate SK) that makes him less attractive (as it prolonged the war (and increased the dead by millions) and ended up with the same result anyways).

I say move Doug back to Sejong-no where he used to be (where Adm Yi is now). Ol' Doug would be close to the U.S. Embassy. No need to offend the Incheoners, we'll put him back in downtown Seoul.

Hum... maybe we could put another statue in the park of McArthur sitting behind his desk in Japan? I mean why celebrate an ephemeral high like liberating Incheon when you can relish non-threatening basic competence. Or how about a statue of Ahn Jong-Hwan?

GI Korea, it's just a few fringe elements who want to get rid of all that. If you read the article, it was never vandalized. I do not believe that statue is going anywhere.

The McArthur statue is located on a nice hill overlooking the Incheon harbor. It only makes sense that this statue would over look the harbor he liberated. Also most Korean people in Incheon do not appear to have a problem with the statue because I have been to the park three times and each time there has been lots of people at the park hanging out on park benches, picnicking, and taking pictures of the statue. They were not protesting or writing graffitti on it. Near the McArthur statue there is also a large sculpture commemorating the friendly relations and alliance between the US and Korea. I wonder if they want to get rid of that to.
