Give Dougie Mac the Saddam treatment!

Doug macSome people really need to be slapped up the head:

Civic groups in Incheon have complained that local police are wasting manpower in guarding a statue of General Douglas MacArthur, who successfully led the amphibious counter-attack by U.S.-led UN troops here during the Korean War.

Since 2002, Incheon police have been guarding the statue in the city’s Freedom Park for fear of vandalism. Anti-U.S. demonstrations took place in the the park in 2002 and 2003, according to the police.

Three officers have been detailed to guard the statue around the clock. No actual damage has been reported.

Civic groups in Incheon want the statue to be moved to another location so police will not waste time and energy on the mission.

Conservatives in Incheon disagreed. “Incheon should feel proud having the statue here,” said Han Il-tae, 75.

OK, now, one might wonder if concern for the overworked Incheon police force was all that was bothering the civic groups. And of course, it wasn’t — from the Dong-A Ilbo (Korean):

10 civic groups including Incheon Solidarity for Peace and Participation said Tuesday, “It’s problematic that the statue of MacArthur, a Cold War relic, stands in Freedom Park, which as the first modern-style park in Korea, is a symbol of modern Incheon… We have decided to launch a movement demanding the statue be moved to the Incheon Landing Memorial Hall in Yeonsu-gu, Ongnyeon-dong.

Over at the homepage of Incheon Solidarity for Peace and Participation, we have this creative piece of Photoshop work of General Doug getting the Saddam treatment:

doug hussein

Just lovely — and one wonders why some might find the police escort necessary. According to the JoongAng Ilbo’s Korean version of the piece, which is characteristically twice as long as the English, 30 members of the same group demonstrated in front of the statue in 2002, claiming, “It hurts our pride ™ that a statue of an American general stands in the park representing Incheon.” At this point, I might have made a wise crack about toppling statues of Lafayette if the thought didn’t absolutely horrify me. To the group’s credit, however, they are just calling for the statue to be moved — they have yet to request it be melted down into bullets to send up North.

Oh, and some other loons held a series of anti-American demonstrations in front of statue this September as well.

You are wrong Marmot. You call these losers “civic groups”. Just who are these kooks calling themselves as “civic groups”? I call them spies, agitators, idiots, tools for the north, and the mentally ill.

City of Incheon should not only leave the statue where it is, they should put up two American flags on each side of the statue. It’ll be the saddest day in Korea if that statue ever gets moved.

Actually, the Dong-A called them “progressive civic groups.” No, that’s not because the Dong-A considers moving Doug a “progressive” act, but simply to link the current administration with society’s radical fringes.

Oh come on. First, we all know it’s inevitable that It Hurts Our Pride??? will one day overtake the people and they will demand that Macalt’s statute be removed. And second, there will always be sadder days. Don’t underestimate these people!

This is much like a slow-motion, on-going cultural revolution, fraught with political revision and ingratitude. Ingratitude especially when last weekend I can stand in a local park and watch people being happy, well-fed and content — a marked improvement from fifty years ago — no thanks to North Korea or their bankrupt ideology.

The McArthur statue is located on a nice hill overlooking the Incheon harbor. It only makes sense that this statue would over look the harbor he liberated. Also most Korean people in Incheon do not appear to have a problem with the statue because I have been to the park three times and each time there has been lots of people at the park hanging out on park benches, picnicking, and taking pictures of the statue. They were not protesting or writing graffitti on it. Near the McArthur statue there is also a large sculpture commemorating the friendly relations and alliance between the US and Korea. I wonder if they want to get rid of that to.

GI Korea, it’s just a few fringe elements who want to get rid of all that. If you read the article, it was never vandalized. I do not believe that statue is going anywhere.

Don’t worry — even if the statue is moved, he shall return…

Hum… maybe we could put another statue in the park of McArthur sitting behind his desk in Japan? I mean why celebrate an ephemeral high like liberating Incheon when you can relish non-threatening basic competence. Or how about a statue of Ahn Jong-Hwan?

I say move Doug back to Sejong-no where he used to be (where Adm Yi is now). Ol’ Doug would be close to the U.S. Embassy. No need to offend the Incheoners, we’ll put him back in downtown Seoul.

why not stick him at the 38th parallel, where he wanted to drop all those cobalt-tipped a-bombs in order to create a 1000-year-long dmz?

McArthur gets all the props in the world for his leading of charges at the head of his troops during WWI and for his initial actions in Japan (before the great step back) and for the Incheon landing. It’s the decision to go North (and going beyond the UN (oh wait, you hate it now that the US no longer contols it like it did then) mandate to liberate SK) that makes him less attractive (as it prolonged the war (and increased the dead by millions) and ended up with the same result anyways).

Wedge, not a bad thought, but why not move him to the US, along with the rest of USFK.

    Kimbob,

For the record I never said the statue has ever been vandalized. I said I have never seen anyone vandalize the statue. Generally people seem happy to have the statue there because every time I have been there people are hanging out having a good time and taking pictures of the statue.
