Maybe Americans really ARE dumb

alice and nickCiting a recent story in the New York Post, MyDaily (Korean) reports that Nicolas Cage’s wife, Alice Kim, will never be confused for Arthur Schlesinger. Actually, I prefer the LA Daily News account of this very blog-worthy story:

Shockwaves throughout the acting community as word comes that Nicolas Cage’s newest wife (No. 3) may belong to the sub-Mensa set.

In an unflattering report, the New York Post says that at the recent L.A. premiere of Nick’s latest adventure flick, “National Treasure,” the former Alice Kim, 20, was agog when someone mentioned the Declaration of Independence. A Post spy says the former sushi-restaurant waitress looked at the person and said, “What is the Declaration of Independence?”

Cage, 40, was quick to the rescue with “I’m sorry — please don’t ask my wife any history questions.” Would astrophysics be a better topic?

MyDaily also reported that Kim has been dogged with the contemptuous label, “the 19-year-old Korean waitress,” which I find extremely unfair, as most young waitresses in Korea would know what the U.S. Declaration of Independence was.

    Get her on Leno.
I wonder if she is also one of those “sub-mensa” Americans that believe Saddam was behind the 9/11 attacks and that they found WMDs in Iraq? Maybe she should just move to a different color state and she’d fit right in…

Big deal. I’ve noticed that so many Americans don’t know about their own country, let alone any other country.

I wonder about her English ability.

Obviously it’s not bad or nonexistent, but “young waitresses in Korea would know what the U.S. Declaration of Independence was” only in Korean. Or maybe English if you wrote it down.

The Korean press reports that the two of them are coming here in the middle of December and will actually be spending most of their time with the Korean in-laws, and I do think she was an immigrant and relatively late arrival in the US.

The tabloid shots at the poor girl are probably just part of a vast plot by former Cage’s suck-face Lisa Ling, who is known to exaggerate about Korean woman to make them look bad.

Marrying him though, that woman’s obviously either really smart or really not.

The question is why are they asking about the Declaration of Independence anyway? I’m not saying that they shouldn’t, but would they ask that to Tony Curtis’s blond bimbo of a gf that I always saw sauntering around Hollywood with her big fake boobs? I think not. I’m not trying to pull out the race card (really, I’m not), but it is suspiciously insidious if you ask me. Honestly, do they ask those questions to younger, WHITE arm candy of famous movie stars???

Ladymckim! Indeed it does sound like a race issue. Prejudice against blond women is such that a lot of people wouldn’t even “waste their time” asking.

Ladymckim, I’m assuming that the Declaration of Independence was brought up since it is featured prominently in the movie, I have only seen the trailers for the movie, but isn’t there supposed to be a treasure map on the back of the DoI?

She sounds more ‘American’ than ‘Korean’ with her comment. Sad, but….well, just sad.

scott: WMD’s were found in Iraq. Artillery rounds loaded with Sarin and Mustard gas, for example. Google it if you don’t believe me.

Well what do you expect. It’s the NY post. It’s right wing yellow journalism at it’s best.

BTW Madne0, WMDs were NOT found. put down the kool aid.

Sarin is now a WMD? Why the hell did Bush do a huge presentation to the UN using his pawn Colin to try to prove that WMDs existed if sarin qualified? Everyone knew about sarin, since Hussein used it against his own people. No, Bush tried to convince the world that he had more deadly WMDs. He succeeded in misleading the world, and apparently duped the US population as well.

Curious: my bad…didn’t know ANYTHING about the movie. So if it is about the Dec. of Ind. then I think it’s actually quite funny that they asked her. What an IDIOT!!!

Nicks wife none too bright eh?

Well she will fit right in there in the USA. A country where most residents do not have a pasport and most have never been outside their own state, it is not surprising that as a nation Americans are not too clever and insular.

They say that ignorance is bliss, so if that is the case the USA must be the most content country on the planet.

Folks! a little advice, get a grip before it’s too late and for got sake take an interest in the world and other peoples customs.

Education is a wonderful thing, take advantage of it.

A note to Mr Cage, I love you as an Actor but please dont depend on your scripts to make you seem like an educated guy
( as I saw you being caught off guard at a Grand Prix and you seems lost for words)dont let your wife make you seem even dumber….put her through college!

Best Regards from Good Old Blighty

i realize you probably meant this as a troll, but where did you get the statistic that most americans have never been outside their own state.

i have heard that most don’t own a passport (until 2008 at least, you don’t need one to travel for thousands of miles in any direction), but the idea that they don’t even travel to other states just doesn’t ring true. some states are so small that you just fall over and you’re over the stateline. a good leap with a running start will put you two states over.

sure, we have big states out west that are as big as medium-sized countries in lesser parts of the world, which you would think make it harder to get oneself into a neighboring state, but few people live out there, not enough to contribute much to ‘most,’ and besides those people do travel to other states, on the way to nevada for gambling.

    mr. marmot-sama,

the previous post wouldn’t let me include a link to my blog about the passport news (starting in 2008, Americans will need passports to get back into the US from Canada and Mexico), saying that it was spam. so i took out the link and it went through.

    what gives?

I wonder if any of you bloggers are “above” mensa and I highly doubt that so I wouldn’t go around making fun of people because they don’t know what the declaration of independence is. Why not make a consensus? This is only an issue because she isn’t white. If she was white and she said “whats the declaration of indepenence?” I doubt it would’ve causes any problems just the remove the “maybe” from the title
