And some Americans are just evil

Hamel posted a link to this piece in one of the comment threads; it really does leave you speechless:

LOS ANGELES : An 86-year-old American grandfather was Friday found guilty of engaging in international sex tourism after he was arrested on his way to the Philippines to sleep with two pre-teen girls.

Wheelchair-bound widower and grandfather John Seljan is the first person to be convicted at trial of violating the 2003 Protect Act that punishes US sex tourists irrespective of where the crime took place.

I mean, get this:

Seljan was arrested at Los Angeles airport on October 3, 2003, as he prepared to fly to the Philippines armed with 45 kilograms (100 pounds) of chocolates, sex aids, pornographic pictures and sexually explicit letters written to at least two young girls, aged nine and 12, prosecutors said.

Many of the pictures show Seljan with small girls who were often naked.

Seljan is sometimes naked or has his underwear pulled down, while his letters to the girls are rife with references to their “love-making.”

Hamel says in his comment:

Ah, there are some very sick puppies out there. It?????s a crying shame. I?????d like some liberal to tell me how and why this guy can be ????rehabilitated?????. I think he should be put away for ever and castration is not a bad idea.

Does that make me a redneck? Or just someone who wants to stand up for the vulnerable? Heck, that makes me sound like a liberal!

Well, one would certainly hope he gets put away forever, although at 86, forever might not be that long. Some might take solace, however, in the belief that Hell may have a very special place reserved for this sick bastard.

I agree that castration is probably the best punishment - and a particularly cruel and painful form of castration would be best.

    Hey Hamel,

You’d like ” I?€™d like some liberal to tell me how ..” etc.

You’re a stupid arsehole. No liberal in the world, no sane person of any kind, would defend child molestation, so stop this kind of Goebbels-like partisan hackery. It’s called “demonization of your adversary” and it’s cheap and moronic. Go post on Bill O’reilly’s website if you want to attribute ludicrous opinions to your opponents.

It’s like if I said ” I would like some neocon to tell me how slitting children’s throats is ok”

To close, you’re a demogoge idiot and anything but an apology shows it.

Zdunk: I am sorry if you misunderstood my words. I certainly did not intend what I said to be the complement of you wanting some neocon to tell me how slitting children?€™s throats is ok. In no way did I mean to suggest that Western liberals condone child molestation.

What I was referring to - and apparently not clearly enough - was the belief common among western liberals that locking people up from society for the term of their natural lives (or even for a very long time) is not good, and that most if not all criminals can be rehabilitated and allowed to join society again.

I am reminded, for instance, of the very famous case in the lead up to the 1988 presidential election of Willie Horton a convicted murderer, who was released on a ‘weekend furlough’ program from prison and decided not to return, instead assaulting a couple, raping the woman and stealing their car.

My point is that some people’s behaviour is just so inimical to the good order of society that they actually shouldn’t be allowed to re-join it. Arguably, this Seljan chap probably won’t, but he should have been locked up 20 years ago at about the time he started “educating” young Asian girls in the art of “loving”.

So please don’t misinterpret my remarks. I plead guilty to being a stupid arsehole most of my life, and sometimes cheap and moronic. I plead not guilty to demonisation of the enemy, primarily because it’s exactly the trend I rail against in politics - I don’t like Bush as President of the USA but I don’t hate the man or think him evil. I stand with Clinton when he said, somewhat plaintively, “Am I the only person in the entire United States of America who likes both George W. Bush and John Kerry? Who believes they’re both good people, who believes they both love our country, and they just see the world differently?”

To close, I may be an idiot but I’m hardly a demagogue.

In Hamel’s defense, liberals and other “progressives” tend to deny the existence of Evil, and of Free Will. Thus, they look for socio-economic or psychological factors to explain criminals like the one described in the article, and believe that proper education can solve the resuting problems. While those factors may be present, at the end of the day, the criminal himself is responsible for his actions.

Considering the core of Christian gospel is that anyone, no matter how horrible the sinner, can be saved and redeemed if only they accept Jesus, it is not with some little irony that modern conservatives would choose to ridicule progressives for being optimistic about reforming man. I don’t see liberals denying the existance of free will either, perhaps you have liberals confused with structuralist historians.

There was a survey in the Korean news a few years back about some stats saying “8 out of 10 German men in their 60s who die in Southeat Asia die of heart attack.” Must be the heat.

Someone who knows what he’s talking about (not me) will be able to confirm whether Kim Il Sung sired a child when he was in his 80s.

BTW, what’s really sad is that this story probably reached the news because the guy is so old. Imagine all the 30, 40, 50-somethings who travel abroad for the same purpose and never get noticed.

I think I recall some famous old actor in Hollywood siring progeny in his 70s. Men can keep going and going until they die. I didn’t for one minute think that the news value of this story lay in the man’s age. I hadn’t really seen that as an important part of the story at all until Oranckay brought it up.

By the way, Oranckay, you know me personally - am I a demagoge [sic] idiot?

Jing: forgiveness from God is great, but it doesn’t mean that you get out of facing up to the earthly consequences of what you’ve done. It means you should have the strength and grace to deal with them. I recall the story in the late 90s of a convicted murderess in Texas on death row, who pleaded for clemency on the basis that she now a reformed woman who had converted to Christianity. My opinion on the death penalty is not hard and fast either way, but I thought while her conversion was a good thing for her, it didn’t provide a basis for clemency, given that she had already set the process of her execution in motion by commiting the crimes she did.

If Mr Seljak repents of his crimes and turns to God in his jail cell, all well and good for him, but it doesn’t justify releasing him onto the streets, in my opinion.

Personally, I don’t understand why Zdunk was offended by Hamel’s remark on liberals.

John Seljan had some help with his financing of his trips, how many girls did he bring (sponsor)into the states to share with his financiers? SEVERAL! His financier was Jeff Rawlins the CEO of Vend Catering in Santa Fe Springs, and owner and partner of John Seljan with Waljan Products. He has a long term friendship with John Seljan and talks to him every weekend from jail. He is very supportive of John to this day and suspiciously connected. Where is the clean up crew? Why is it that the very man that gave John Seljan the $50,000.00 to go to the Phillipines is not being arrested too?
