Yon-sama!!!

Even the Beeb gets in the act:

BaeKorean actor Bae Yong-joon [English and Korean, but no Japanese page. Odd -- Marmot] has been greeted by thousands of screaming fans on a visit to Japan’s capital Tokyo.

The 32-year-actor, who has starred in hit television dramas shown in Japan, is known as Yong Sama - a name which means “royalty” in Japanese.

The star has become one of the most popular actors in Japan due to a fashion for all things Korean.

Bae has become a household name for his role in Winter Sonata, a soap opera which scored huge ratings.

The actor said he was worried before making the trip to Tokyo.

Love affair

“I could hardly sleep last night. I was worried there would be so many fans that they might hurt themselves,” he said.

The thousands of mainly middle-aged female fans who turned out to see Bae either cried or grabbed pictures of him on their mobile phones.

Yon-sama!!!

Unfortunately for Bae, his worries apparently became a reality for about 10 of his fans:

japanese ajummaTen female fans aged between 43 and 65 were injured after being pushed over when an eager crowd swarmed around popular Korean actor Bae Yong-joon outside a swish Tokyo hotel on Friday, police said.

Police are questioning officials connected with the actor’s visit to determine whether there were any problems with the management of his fans.

Investigators said Bae was in the Hotel New Otani in Tokyo’s Chiyoda-ku on Friday afternoon. When he came out of the entrance and got into his car, about 1,000 fans, many of them middle-aged women, crowded around the vehicle.

Some of the fans fell over while others got caught under the wheel of the vehicle, leaving some of them with leg, hip and chest injuries.

Damn, those Japanese ajumma can be animals.

Some Japanese entertainers are feeling a bit miffed by the whole Bae Yong-joon craze, though. Or so says Herald Gyeongje, which in turn quoted the Japanese tabloid Yukan-Fuji. Actress Toda Keiko, announcing the production of her mono-drama “Naniwa Butterfly” at the PARCO Theater in Tokyo’s Shibuya district the same day Bae arrived in town, told the fans that showed up, “I’ll never forget the faces of those fans who showed up today despite Bae Yong-joon’s visit.” She was also overheard murmuring to herself after the press conference, “Why the hell did he have to come today?” Meanwhile, boy bander Kusanagi Tsuyoshi — who is known in Korea by the name “Chonangang,” was asked at an industry award ceremony he attended whether he was causing as big a boom in Korea as Bae was causing in Japan. To which the pretty boy smiled and replied, “I can still walk around on the streets in Korea [because no one knows who he is].”

What I’m surprised at is that Tokyo governor Ishihara Shintaro hasn’t said anything stupid yet about Bae’s visit, although I guess this is only a matter of time.

the joongang (english) had an article today written by a famous
singer in korea. his name is cho yong nam and he wrote about his recent
trip to japan which was for him his first trip to japan. he wrote that
he was surprised to find that many young japanese people don’t seem as
interested in hating koreans like the older ones do. he then talked about
a movie that surprised the shit out of me. you see, it was a japanese movie
that was highly acclaimed by the critics. indeed, it won best film at the
moscow film festival. so, it was a japanese film with japanese actors. the
catch? ALL of the japanese(not ethnic koreans) actors spoke in KOREAN!
in korean? i couldn’t believe it; for most of my life the japanese
have never been very interested in koreans or their culture. i have never
met a single japanese who could even speak korean. and now we see japanese
young people making a movie not in japanese but korean? amazing. the lead
actor of this movie indicated that he liked korea so much that sometimes he pronounces
the chinese characters in his name ala korean. too bad the movie was ignored in korea.
it’s title? can’t remember, something like ‘venus hotel’ or something.

go find the article at joongang
