The Cruelest Cut

I think I need a break - especially after looking at this post and the previous one. Actually I am doing some research on sex in the late Choson period and noticed this article from Thailand a couple of days ago.

It seems that everyone is going happy with knives - first there was Bobbet and then she was followed by a number of copy-cat slashers, and now there is this guy.

A Thai artist discovered that two young boys that he let live in his house for free (there are always some hidden costs) had robbed him of a large sum of money. He decided to take matters into his own hands after the police failed to do so and with a couple of quick swipes with a sharp blade made sure that the boys were no longer boys. He doesn’t appear to have any regrets in the matter and said, “There’s nothing they deserved more for stealing the money I saved.” Read it for yourself.

Now back to my own research.

During the late Choson period there were a lot of eunuchs and as Doctor Horace Allen noted - most of the eunuchs were created by having their testicles removed, but in some cases they had everything removed. Somewhere I have something on the manner of removing the equipment but it hurts too much to read it. I do remember that a number of the boys died while being converted. It should be remembered that during King Kojong’s reign that some of the most powerful men (??) in the Kingdom were eunuchs. Dr. Allen also noted that the eunuchs had their own households - complete with wives and women, and evidently some of these guys (I use that term loosely) who only (?) had their testicles removed seemed to be still sexually active - one of Dr. Allen’s patients was a eunuch who had “the clap.”

I think it was Dallet that wrote about a French missionary in Korea during the early 1800s who noted another method of creating eunuchs. Of course this one wasn’t deliberate and probably wasn’t too common, but sounds possible. It appears that small children often ran around naked and in an age when there wasn’t any toilet paper and the children were forced to use other means of wiping themselves after using the facilities and probably didn’t do a very good job. One of the many animals that roamed the streets of Seoul and for that part, the country side, was the Ddong Kae (shit dog). This dog is infamous for eating dung and one can imagine that they might have even decided to go to the source and lick their young masters clean. According to Dallet (?) at least one of these Ddong Kae went about his task too zealously and ended up nipping off something that he shouldn’t have leaving his young master (mistress?) with a new occupational calling.

Is this true - who knows? It is just one of the curious things you read while doing research.

I heard that story about dog’s licking people clean from one of my Professors at Yonsei. And this was when he was a kid… around the time of the Korean war.

If you go to the “Toilet Museum” in the Lake Park (??¸????³????) in Ilsan (??¼??°), you can see a life-size mock-up of a dog licking a little kid’s behind. The mother is holding the kid up under his thighs with his back against her chest so his behind sticks out. The dog is right there with his tongue out, as if on cue. There is no admission fee, so stop by and check it out if you are in the area. It is a nice little 5- to 10-minute tour. And while you are there, check out the plate-glass window restroom next to the lake near the museum. You can take your girlfriend to the anteroom of the restroom and chat and drink a cup of coffee while looking out on the lake. What could be more romantic?

Horrifying. I believe it happenned, too.(the dog) As for the enuchs, I guess they did an incomplete job on creating eunuchs. Horrifying!

You know what, I’m Korean, and I learned from you, a Long Island white man, what the Ddong Gae really is.

Amazing. And thanks. I’m guessing 9 of 10 of my Korean peers don’t know what a Ddong Gae really was.

I can’t fault the D Dog too much for being the D Dog. I ‘ve seen expensive, “high class” dogs eat their own crap several times. One was a Pom.

I’m thinking the dog didn’t eat dung as its main dish, but only did so because it was hungry.

I guess you can watch a Pom eat its own dung easily, if the Pom is not presented with the usual human dishes or meat.

Not too surprising. All dogs seem to lick their anuses, clean. Thank God I’m human, and thus my body will make it impossible for me to do so.

WSJ — While I’d like to take credit for this, the Long Island white dude (i.e., me) didn’t write this post. Robert Neff, like Hamel, has been kind enough to spare some time out of his busy schedule to write occassional posts on this humble blog. He did the post immediately prior to this one, too.

Now, as for dogs biting off things they shouldn’t, I think I read in Jasper Becker’s book “The Chinese” (at least I think it was his book. It might have been “Red China Blues,” too) that this sort of thing happens in China (usually to toddlers), and for that reason there was at least one doctor who was doing a roaring trade in penis reconstructive surgeries. I have no idea if that’s true, and I didn’t have any dogs attempt to get intimate with me while in was in China. Of course, I gather dogs can sense at this point it’s best not to fuck with me unless they want to end up in a pot and consumed with large quantities of baekseju. They can smell their fallen comrades, I’m sure.

As Brian noted, Ddong-Gae(????°œ)’s are not just Chosun dynasty material, and it’s not such a little-known concept among Koreans either. My dad had a ddong-gae he utilized every now and then when he was a child. Other times when he had to wipe himself, he used a ?????¼?¤? to “floss” his butthole. Quite amazing that such was the state of post-war Korea only 50 years ago. It’s so easy for one to forget how lucky one is and how grateful one should be for his given circumstances and environment.

Of course, Chinese fur-kids wouldn’t mess around with oddball strays. AKC breeds such as pekingese, shih-tzu, pug and lhasa apso aren’t quite in the same, uh, league?
Don’t be daft, sweetie: Red China Blues is written by a banana called Jan Wong.
Her book is in the league of Dummy’s Guide to China. Jasper Becker? An expanded version.

There was a movie about eunuchs (naesi) done years ago, titled Naesi (1986). My parents saw it on accident in Paris and refused to see any Korean film for at least a decade later because it was nothing but sex and slicing. Even the poster almost looks like porn, but the man you see is indeed the respected actor An S?´ng Ki. Some stills from the film are here.

Silla era eunuchs were sometimes priestly characters, the idea in at least some cases apparently that they were human but not fully, existences somewhere between man and spirit. Or so I read once upon a time.

In Kogry?´ times many big happenin’ elites in high places were eunuchs. The son of the author of Samguk Sagi and An Hyang, the gentleman who brought the style of Confucianism that would later dominate Chos?´n, were eunichs. (How that works I don’t know - I just checked that again about An Hyang and my handy little sourcebook says as much, but then I also know someone who is a descendant of his and of course they’re all over the place, so go figure. In Chos?´n they adopted children but given An’s househould that can’t have been the case so maybe they did the procedure after having a few children or something? Another big difference between Kory?´ and Chos?´n era eunuchs it seems was that during at least part of Chos?´n they were a class by themselves and somewhat “raised” for the purpose and since they weren’t at least with the Kory?´ elite eunuchs, I can see it would be possible they had their own biological children.)

Thanks to Mr. Bevers for that about Hosu Kongw?´n in Ilsan. I’ll be right near there tomorrow and will make a special trip to see Ttongkae licking away. Don’t take this in the wrong way, but I’ll be thinking of you Mr. Bevers and maybe take a pic.

    To lindenwood,
You are indeed correct that I was trying to be cute and I apologize for any offence that I might have caused you with the comment.

I have told that story of the dog to many of my Korean friends and most of them completely dismiss it as fiction. One of my friends recently noted that there are a lot of things that Koreans just don’t want to admit happen because of the “shame” and out of fear that the world will laugh at them. I think it is a shame that a country that has progressed so much in such a short time is so insecure. The initial responses from my friends concerning this article I am working on about sex in the late Choson period is pretty much along the same line of “Why would you want to write about that? Why don’t you write about something nice?” History is history, and more often than not - it is filled with things that are unflattering. Christopher Columbus discovered (was he the first one?) America, and though that might be a great and remarkable accomplishment - think of the negative side behind it. Millions and millions of native people died (North and South America) in the years that followed from wars, disease, and starvation. The world is in constant motion and history records that - there will always be change with winners and losers. It is a shame (no, it is a crime) to try and rewrite history so as it only protrays a person/country in a positive light. It doesn’t work that way.

Marmot - sorry about this plug - hopefully in the near future some of your readers might be interested in purchasing one of my books - when they finally are finished.

There - my shameless plug is done…….. (my ulterior motive for writing on your blog is revealed)

Oranckay - I still need to get that old Korean curse word to you so that you can look it up. If you do take a picture of the Ddong-Kae (yes, I know our spellings are different but remember the Korea Times still uses the old system) I would really appreciate getting a copy of it. My best

Sorry to play language cop (and note I wasn’t trying to correct anyone) but….

Ttong would be right in orthodox McCune-Reischaeur, in the previous Korean government version of MR, and in the current government (non-MR based) system. If the KT is writing “ddong” while claiming to be holding out on the old system (which wouldn’t surprise me at all) then they’re full of it.

Sorry, I am gonna be a language cop– the spelling is Bobbit.

I tell you only so that you can revive old Lorena songs (to the tune of ‘the lion sleeps tonight’) and make updated schoolyard limericks that take advantage of the LOTR’s recent popularity.

Indeed, rob, I encourage you to find share and publish all the great stuff you dig up about Chosun funny stuff. Seems like you’ve good a the right attitude toward history. Really, what does it mean to “discover” a continent 14,000 years after it’s original discovery and human settlement? (Even longer if you buy those new pre-clovis culture settlement theories… NOVA on PBS recently did a program on “Beringia” and the Bering Strait crossing into N. America… so now these comments really do have some connection to asia…)

    nulji maripkan:

First of all - it appears that I owe you an apology - I was able to retrieve the emails - it is amazing how long items will stay in the trash. They don’t appear to be directly addressed to me but instead appear to have been sent to the blog and they were not posted. Perhaps a little censureship on “the Marmot’s” part. Just as your last past some of your profanity has been removed.

I am, however, going to repost these past posts of yours just to shut you up and will leave it to the Marmot on whether he removes them or not [I can understand why he did - they are pretty stupid and just obnoxious]. Please note - I am was going to do you the favor of posting them in full which meant your ip address and everything else would be revealed but that would be somewhat immature and also irresponsible. So other than the addresses and your email - I will leave the posts as they stand. Hope that is satisfactory to you. Also note that one of them seems to contradict you being an American - the one that you would like me to teach you English and you will tell me about Korean superiority. Please see below:

The second part: The toilet habits of the West - I think you missed the entire point of the post - the dog incident relates to the removal of a certain part of the male anatomy. To be honest, the toilet issues of Koreans, Japanese, or for that matter any nationality doesn’t interest me. However for your viewing pleasure I do encourage you to read one of the Japanese dailies that printed an article on urination about a month or two ago. I am sure that in your zealous state you should have no difficulty in finding it.

Finally - I find it very amusing that this article bothered you so much. Thanks for the encouragement. When I manage to make a little more free time I will be sure to include more of the above little gems becaue I know there will be at least one person out there reading them - you.

As always - wishing you the best in your own little world.

Not to suggest that Mr Marmet is a loser or somthing but I would also stay clear of a dude wearing a KKK outfit or a gay leather wearing guy.

Well nulji maripkan, I guess you do deserve an apology on the name thing - I do indeed apologize and will make it quite clear that I made the mistake and thought the individual was you - the names are similar and I am still new enough on this Blog not to know everyone’s former nicknames. Naturally - and this is directed at everyone - it would be far easier if you used your real names. I think that Marmot and I, along with a few other people, stand by what we write and therefore have no problems with being associated with it. It would be nice if we all had this ability - I must ask you though - if you are the person that “if i[you] saw a white guy wearing
hanbok in seoul, i?€™d [you'd] go right up to him because i [you] would want to know who this person is.” Or “i don?€™t mince words and i don?€™t play games.” If these are all true - put your money where your mouth is - be a man/woman and back your words with a name. I assume that you being the good American that you are will remember why John Hancock signed his name so large - he wanted people to know it was he that signed the Dec. of Indep. and wanted the good ol’ king to see his name. Need I say more?

As to finding the doll in the park - I would again suggest that you go back and reread it - I never said I found the doll. It seems that there might be a couple more apologies that need to go around - are you game?

    Again and always
Wishing you the best in your very small world
