Korea — the Donut Hub of Northeast Asia

Maybe President Roh’s “Northeast Asian Hub” plans weren’t so goofy, after all — Krispy Kreme plans to use Korea as its foothold in the Asia region!

“Judging that the growth rate of the Korean market was great, Korea is the first Asian nation we’ve entered,” said a marketing manager at the headquarters of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. He added, “With the Korean market as a foothold, we’re planning to make inroads into the whole Asian region.” It is assumed 80 to 90 percent of the W50 billion worth Korean donut market is occupied by Dunkin Donuts.

They’ve already over-extended themself in America. The new low-carb diet craze over here isn’t exactly helping. So they need new revenue source to offset the losses in US.

The $24,000,000 question at my office is where these Krispy Kreme outlets will be located.

I remember my first time trying them. I was flying out of LA and had some for breakfast. I also had some left-over cheesecake from the CHeesecake Factory that I needed to finish off before I left so I had that as well. Predictably, I ended up throwing up in the bathroom at Burbank airport right bfore my flight.

It’s been a while since I’ve back in to the States, but it seems that a lot of these chains start to look overseas when their domestic futures start looking bleak. Take KFC or Dunkin Donuts and Baskin-Robbins - they all SEEMED to be on the decline last time I was Stateside.

Someone else seems to be a big fan, too.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t lived in the US since Reagan, but I never heard of the guys. And frankly homegrown, non-chain dounut stores are always the best.

Oh great. Obesity-ridden America doesn’t want its own junk food anymore so now they want to sell it in Korea.

oranckay– It’s not just because you haven’t lived in the US since Reagan, it’s also because you didn’t live in the South. Krispy Kreme has been the doughnut throughout the South since 1937. It’s only been since 1996 that they’ve expanded outside of their regional base in the Southeast.

Where I’m from, in North Carolina the home of Krispy Kreme, a doughnut is a Krispy Kreme.

Hey you guys stop putting down Krispy Kreme. The Krispy Kreme “Original Glazed” is THE donut, and just melts in your mouth if you eat it fresh out of the oven. Is no comparison to that Dunkin’ Donuts shit. May Krispy Kreme live long and prosper in Korea.

Krispy Kreme and America….getting stinking fat together since 1937.

    Korea: be very, very afraid.

Krispy, Dunkin… all pale before Tim Hortons (for years, the No. 1 franchise in Canada… out earning even McDonalds).

Korean kids’ diets can be more like American diets. This is a good thing. But remember: Koreans kids are making a CHOICE to buy and ingest American crap. Nobody’s forcing this on them.

Are they going to use the appropriate spelling “Crispy Creme” when they open in Corea?
