Euro Mongols / Garden State Mongols

Joshua over at Katolik Shinja linked to this LAT piece on the Kalmyks, that last bastion of the Golden Horde. We here at the Marmot’s Hole are big fans of all things Mongol (well, at least I am. Not sure about Hamel), and the LAT story does make for an interesting read about a fascinating group of folk.

While you’re at it, you should check out this terrific website on the Kalmyk Buddhist Temple that served the Kalmyk emigre population of Belgrade, Yugoslavia between 1929 and 1944. The photos are truly priceless.

You can also check out the webpage of Kalmyk American Society, based in Philadelphia, which doesn’t have a whole lot, but there are photos from various folk ceremonies they’ve conducted. There is also the homepage of the Kalmuck Mongolian Buddhist Center in Howell, NJ, which everyone knows has the largest concentration of Kalmyks in the Western hemisphere.
