A third way

I am a bit late with this, but I throw it up for your information anyways. Almost two weeks ago, a young Korean American by the name of Alice Jean Suh, who now advises a group called LiNK (Liberation in North Korea), published a very interesting and thought-provoking letter in the opinion section of the Korea Times. Sometimes those English tourist newsletters can be good for something, I guess.

In it she takes both the old Cold War conservatives, as well as the appeasement monkey liberals of the Uri Party, to task for their positions on North Korean human rights. She writes:

Both sides may be impassioned, but they do little to advance the cause of North Korean human rights and refugees. Both assume a flawed argument - that a policy of economic engagement with North Korea requires silence on its human rights.

She sees a new breed of moderates emerging who reject a black and white view.

They??ve seen that 50 years of demonizing the North has gotten nowhere, but they are also growing increasingly uncomfortable with the Uri Party??s quiet acceptance of the severe and ongoing human rights crisis in North Korea. They risk vicious attacks from other South Korean progressives simply for advocating an honest human rights dialogue with the North.

It’s certainly a letter I advise you to read in full, because this third way might get further than the other two have. Certainly, Bill Rammel got further than most people expected in the area of Human Rights discussions by seeming to following this middle path of moderation. Of course, there’s a long way to go, but is this a viable start?

Those 50 years of “getting nothing” out of demonizing North Korea… well North Korea had an economy until recently, so I think its now more vulnerable… if making a fuss about human rights in North Korea ever had a chance to affect things, its now.

    N. Korea seems talented at binding one issue to another. Why does the south not tie food aide to human rights objectives?
