Got it and I’m genuinely glad both that Rumsfeld made the effort to visit them and that he was welcomed. This administration can well be faulted for not doing more of this type of thing — every coalition partner troop unit in Iraq should have received a visit from Rumsfeld long since (or even Bush — I think he should do a few more surprise visits like the one for Thanksgiving last year).

Just a word of caution — it’s OhMyNews, and while the guy who wrote the piece does do a regular column for them, I don’t believe he’s OhMyNews staff per say. Like most societies, Korea has a fairly wide spectrum of opinion, so just because I’m busting on one columnist in one particular news outlet should not be taken as an assault on public opinion as a whole. I know you know that, Paul, but I just wanted to clear that up just in case others come away with the opinion that the OhMy report is “representative” of anything other than the opinions of its writer.

I hope you’ll continue to monitor and report here Korean reaction to developments in Iraq.

One imagines a hypothetical US newspaper columnist calling for the withdrawl of US troops from Korea because of the danger of North Korean nuclear attack. It would be best to put some space between them and the South Koreans — why, our troops there practically have bulleyes painted on their backs!

Are Koreans who feel this way really so insular in their outlook that they can’t see this analogy? (rhetorical question, you don’t have to answer…) Oh well, the old saying about not knowing whether to laugh or cry will never lose its savor….
