“Anti-capitalism”? Isn’t that like anti-oxygen? Let’s rid the world of capitalism and then oxygen, it will be a better place…but for whom?
I call them “RWK,” short for rich white kids. They are the kind that fly 16 hours to an improverished farming village in a third world country, tell them that they have a great life, take some video and then jet back to Mommy’s house in Toronto to play the video. The fact they have not slaved from sun up to sunset to exist never crosees their minds. They then pronounce how superior said people are to us and how much better their lives are. Of course their own corrupt goverments are not the cause of their poverty, it is “capitalism.”
Kimchipig, I agree with you about these facile ideological fantasies - I was young and naive one myself. Speaking of which, as long as you’re shedding these groundless ideological biases, how about losing the W in “RWK” - I’m bored with that childish anti Caucasian bias that seems to be so pervasive among angry people. The “White male” scapegoat is just another groundless ideological bugaboo like capitalism or fascism, etc. The white race has no corner on the evils of mankind which history reveals as equal opportunity employers. In fact, the entire social fairness paradigm is essentially and originally - as you note here - largely a Caucasian phenomenon. Liberals take the mea culpa thing too far and it now smacks of coddling which might ironically be criticized as an assumption of moral superiority!
The point is to skip the labels and underscore our common humanity. If there is any ideological culprit that I might cast some blame on it is not capitalism, but supremecism - the sense of “us vs. them” syndrome which manifests as tribalism in Korea, religious-tinged fervor in the Arab states, paranoia in Israel,etc. When people continue to focus on what separates them from others in the world, they become highly contentious and unstable.

Reminds me of 2 Australian anti globalist friends I had here in Korea but have since left. They would rail against the evils of globalization and capitalism while they were 1) working in another country 2) Teaching English (the language of globalization)3) writing star bucks corp to get a star bucks near the University we were working at. Charging good money for private lessons because it was the market price.
