Corina Knoll at KoreAm Journal has an interesting piece pointing out that for many of LA Koreatown’s residents, the “old country” isn’t necessarily Korea. The entire Korean Diaspora is apparently represented, with Korean immigrants from places like Brazil, Argentina and Uzbekistan making their presence felt in the community. Anyway, it’s a fascinating piece and you’re highly encouraged to read through it.

One advantage of being a Spanish speaking Korean in LA is you’ve got all the languages covered. So Koreans from Argentina, Paraguay have it better than other third countries.
I’ve got some cousins-in-law who have learned more Spanish there than English running a market in a hood with no English spoken.
I recall during the Seoul Olympics that members of the Korean diaspora came home to provide translation help. There were beautiful Korean Kyopo from Latin America — a nice combination of Korean physical beauty and Latin passion and cultural hipness.
