At the risk of sounding like Indymedia around here, I link to Pete’s must read post on the latest disinformation campaign about Korea that appears to have successfully made its way into the Western media. Naturally enough, it now seems to be percolating back into Korea (as it was designed to do), having seen two consecutive articles on back to back days in the Chosun paraphrasing Western pieces on the government’s efforts to re-examine its colonial and authoritarian past. Unlike the Oranckay, I’m not particularly high on this latest Uri Party endeavor, but there definitely appears to be some misunderstandings on the part of the Western press about what is going on. Anyway, Pete’s the man to read about all of this, and I encourage you to read his material on this if you haven’t done so already.

I disagree with the Yangbans assessment of this as disinformation. The Western press probably has it just about right this time. Review my comment on his site.
Let me qualify this however. I am not asserting that digging up old graves is soley aimed at discrediting Park and the Conservatives - this is only the POLITICAL motivation. There are also EMOTIONAL and CULTURAL reasons behind the probe as well. Koreans often work at cross-purposes against themselves by allowing their sense of han to undermine their better judgement. They hurl themselves headlong into an ill-advised course of action simply because it feels right to their injured sense of pride. The other cause for this investigation is simply the Korean regressive tendency to cling to old grievances.
But, whatever the motivation, it has nothing to do with historical balance or accuracy, as any astute observer of Korean behavior will affirm.
