Armitage calls Article 9 a barrier to Japan-U.S. relations

This won’t go down well in certain quarters:

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told a Japanese lawmaker Wednesday that the war-renouncing Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution is becoming an obstacle to strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance.

Armitage indicated Japan must revise the Constitution and play a greater military role for international peace if it wants to become a permanent U.N. Security Council member, Hidenao Nakagawa, chairman of the Diet Affairs Committee of Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party, told reporters after meeting with Armitage.

As much as I’m sure that it does indeed scare some even after 60 years has passed since WW2 I’m actually all for Japanese re-arming. With North Korea and China doing who knows what, unfortunately we need a strong military ally in that area in addition to what South Korea may provide.
