Wow, were those grown in Korea or something? Seriously, those are about half the size of the monsters I ate in Uzbekistan. Best and sweetest melons on earth…
I hate speculating, but the guy on the right looks like he’s maybe part Russian or Ukrainian. But then again, he could be a Tatar or a Tajik. It’s so difficult…
The woman though, she’s got a classical “Sart” (generic old word for non-nomads in Transoxiana) kind of look to her–a mix of Persian and Turk. A lot of my students on the Silk Road from Bukhara to Samarkand had this look. In the outlying villages, people looked much more Mongol.
Melons look really delicious. It is normal that they are
small because they are Obi Novvot type, the bigger ones are
called Shakar Palak (Fergana valley). The Obi Novvot type
is usually more delicious as the sugar content in them is
higher, but the problem with them it is more difficult to
transport them as they get bruised more easily. But again,
usually, some farmers collect melons from the fields when
they are not totally ripe, when the melons are not
very soft. By the time they are in the market, they
get softer and ready.

Nice melons. Now, when’s this going to happen in the US. It’ll change your melon habits forever.
