Be careful what you do with your chickens in the ROK:
Police on Tuesday said they rounded up 52 Filipino workers for gambling on cockfights in Namyangju, Kyonggi Province on Sunday.
Nine of them were arrested for organizing the rights at a deserted factory in the city to lure Filipino workers to gambling.
One of those arrested was identified by the surname Atienza, 42. Police also booked 25 others without arrest on the same charges.
The remaining 18, who are undocumented migrant workers, were handed over to the Seoul Immigration Office for potential deportation.
It is the first time such a large number of foreign workers were caught gambling in South Korea, which is illegal under current law.
Police said the nine arrested have been staging cockfights since December 2000, adding that participants bet 1-3 million won ($830-$2,500) for each cockfight for two hours at 1 p.m. every Sunday.
What did this consist of, you might ask:
The gambling organizers allegedly bought the roosters in the open-air Moran Market in Songnam City, and trained them for fighting. They were found to have put specially designed blades, called tares, on the roosters’ feet to increase the injuries inflicted on each other during the fighting.
Well, if you’re going to abuse chickens, I guess it’s better than this (via the Gweilo Diaries):
LUSAKA (Reuters) - A 50-year-old Zambian man has hanged himself after his wife found him having sex with a hen, police said Friday.
The woman caught him in the act when she rushed into their house to investigate a noise.
“He attempted to kill her but she managed to escape,” a police spokesman said.
The man from the town of Chongwe, about 50 km (30 miles) east of Lusaka, killed himself after being admonished by other villagers.
The hen was slaughtered after the incident.

Haha. That’s is one of the most bizarre stories I’ve ever heard. But with getting back to the Filipinos, I wonder if the cops would’ve bothered had the gamblers been Korean. Hmmm. Doubt it.
I’m not exactly sure where the Korean law enforcement draws the line between gambling and leisure, but I think they would have, so don’t read this as a case of discrimination.
Some time ago there was a case in which the cops had been tipped of a gambling session. They busted the scene which was nothing else than a group of old people playing some Go-Stop. One granny was so upset that she dropped dead on the spot. Cops were sorry for “they didn’t know it was just some leisurely playing”. I don’t have the link, but I think this is from Chosun.??????????????쇺궗??쨈 ?쨀???짚??졖??? ?쨔???? 70?흸??????짢쨍????째??????째? ????쨀???쩌 ?째??쨀? ?쨋흹?????흹 ?짼쩍?째째??? ??졻궗??쩌 ??짢?징흸??짚.
