Oh, where’s Kevin at IA when you need to fisk a sports piece. Anyway, it appears that Chiba Lotte’s Lee Seung-yeop, who’s currently basking in the glories of the Japanese minor leagues, is sitting pretty as the top All Star vote-getter among Pacific League designated hitters at the midterm point. Lee has 33,423 votes, easily beating Daiei Hawks DH Julio Zuleta (22,402). In 36 games with the big club, Lee hit a hefty .233 with 5 homers and 19 RBIs. To be fair, Zuleta isn’t exactly hitting up a storm, batting .262 with 9 homers and 21 RBIs in 46 games — not terrible, but not exactly Rogers Hornsby-like, either. He does occupy a major-league roster spot, though. Anyway, SportsToday’s Kim Seung-gi says fans are highly evaluating Lee’s potential and the voters greatly reflecting Lee’s popularity for accomplishments like setting the Asian single season home runs record. We here at the Marmot’s Hole are a bit more skeptical, having visited one of the all-star balloting sites cited in the piece and discovering that even I could vote. Quite nice of them, really. Again, to be fair, Internet voting has so far accounted for only 37.8 percent of the vote, and if Lee has only managed to get 33,423 votes since balloting began on May 13, Korean fans haven’t exactly been flooding Sanyo with votes (although not that the news is out, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lee’s vote count go up).
Voting ends June 20.
Three Koreans have been selected to the Japanese All-Star game — Seon Dong-nyeol in 1997, Jo “I Wonder Who Fathered My Second Kid” Seong-min in 1998 and Gu Dae-seong in 2001. Of course, this leaves out Masaichi Kaneda, a Hall of Famer who racked up 400 wins despite playing for crap teams. He was of Korean descent.

About Masaichi Kaneda, what’s his Korean name? Thanks Mr. Marmot.
Korea Herald has an article at http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/S.....260013.asp
My question: the “Lion King”? where did that come from?
Lee played for a Korean team, the Sam Sung Lions. It was just too easy to call him, the “Lion King.” Probably was the best player of the team, stat wise and popularity wise.
He usually sucked it up in Olympic or international competitions in baseball, though.
Haters called him, the “Gook-San, Lion King.”
(Domestic Lion King)
I think he’s out in Japan to prove that he can play someday in the Major Leagues.
I personally think he must learn another position, though. Like the outfield. Or 3rd base.
But he is playing in the minor league in Japan, now.
