  • 9:00: Citizens converge on Provincial Hall Square and Geumnam-no.

  • 10:30: Military helicopters circle around dropping leaflets “To the rioters.”
  • 11:25: Red Cross Hospital blood donor vans and demonstrator jeeps go around asking for blood donations.
  • 12:00: Korean flag on the roof of Provincial Hall lowered to half mast along with black ribbons.
  • 13:30: Eight representatives from the Citizen Settlement Committee visit Martial Law Command outpost and convey a seven-article plan.
  • 15:08: About 500 university students from Seoul arrive in Gwangju. Welcoming ceremony held.
  • 15:58: Citizens convene mass meeting at Provincial Hall Square while 18 bodies lay in state.
  • 17:18: Citizen Settlement Committee reports results from visit to Martial Law Command.
  • 17:40: 23 more bodies arrive at Provincial Hall Square.
  • 21:30: Prime Minister Park Chung-gun broadcasts that a “state of lawlessness” exists in Gwangju.
