This will my last impeachment piece for the night — there’s a ton of info floating around at the moment, and it’s going to take me a while to digest it. Meanwhile, it’s been a long day, and I got to translate shit for the Chosun tomorrow morning after President Roh makes his special address at 10:00 — figures one of Roh’s first official acts after being reinstated is to rob me of my only day of the week off. Bastard. Point being, all I want to do right now is lounge out and play Rise of Nations (unfortunately, the expansion pact won’t be released in Korea until the end of the month, or so say the folks at the Yongsan electronics market).
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that while I’m usually responsible for translating the Chosun Ilbo’s editorials, I got stuck today handling a ton of other crap, so tonight’s Tolstoy-esque monster of an editorial on the impeachment decision ended up being translated by a very nice and extremely competent translator by the name of Joo-hee. For this, I am very thankful, and you should be, too. If you’re reading today’s special Chosun editorial and find yourself wondering who the linguistic genius was who brought you such a fine piece of professional translating, thank Joo-hee.

Something interesting I realized as I read my Korean newspaper in New York City. The Supreme court of South Korea is set up to do favors for the administration.
There are 9 judges in the South Korean Supreme Court.
5 of them were named to their posts in the Year 2000.
1 in the Year 1999.
1 in the Year 2001.
1 in the Year 2003.
1 in the Year 2004.
This means Roh already had a majority of judges who share political views with Kim Dae Jung, and 1 who got named to the post while he was President.
Very different from America, where Supreme court justices serve till they DIE.
What was it in the US, Marbury vs Madison? That is not possible in South Korea. The courts will never turn against the President. Something to improve on.
Ahoy! If you’re running the pirate ship ‘Emule’ or ‘Edonkey’, you can get that expansion pack for free at Shareconnector…
Arrrr!
WJK,
The Marshall court did not turn against the Jefferson administration in Marbury v. Madison. It actually ruled in favor of Jefferson’s administration.
Marmot,
You are the Chosunilbo translator? Interesting. I will keep that in mind when I see mistranslations in the future
