Free NK Radio to shut down?

After only 22 days, the defector-run Internet radio station Free NK Radio is apparently under pressure to close up shop. They’ve been told to move out of the building in which they’re currently situated, and the station’s staff has reportedly received a number of threats. The North Koreans, too, made mention of the station during recent inter-Korean inter-ministerial talks in Pyongyang, and knowing how much Seoul wants to keep the boys up in Pyongyang happy, I’ve got this sinking feeling the pressure and the threats — if true — might not necessarily be coming from left-wing wackos and/or North Korean agents. Anyway, the Flying Yangban (linked above), Katolik Shinja and Budaechigae have posts on this, so check ‘em out.

What suprises me is the seeming lack of support in South Korea for this group, whose stated goals are freedom, democracy, and unification. The forces for appeasement of the murderous North Korean regime have become so strong in the South that even conservative forces seem to be shying away from taking a stong stand against tide rushing to embrace the Dear Leader.

How can South Koreans be so blinded by the propaganda of Kim Jong-il and his supporters in the South that they do not even want to hear about the atrocities being reported by the lucky few who have managed to escape the horrors in the North?

I want to further Bevers’ comments…

This was an internet broadcasting system. It is incredible, given the nature of Korea and internet usage and the fact that sites like Voice of People thrive, that an anti-North Korean group can’t get funding. Civic groups are like weeds in Korea, and the common anti-American ones clearly have people on staff who make a living or a very significant supplement to their living by being professional anti-US agitators.

It really should blow our minds that a group dedicated to saying bad things about North Korea can’t get enough funding to have a secure base of operation inside South Korea.
