Yet another fine rant by Kevin at IA, this time slamming a Dong-A Ilbo piece on Florida Marlins 1st baseman Choi Hee-seop and Joongang Ilbo sports writer Brian Lee in particular, and Korean sports writing in general. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, this is not a post to miss.

The piece on Choi reminds me of many stories of sports writers sent to other countries to cover sports they are barely familiar with.
I remember one ABC broadcast of a English Rugby match with an ex-NFL star in the booth. I think it was Chris Collinsworth, but don’t hold me to that. The whole point of the story is that ABC couldn’t find 2 people with American accents to properly describe the game to the US audience.
I wished Choi would have been able to stay with the Cubs. It would have made it easier to take my daughter to see him. I know he was in Iowa at the AAA level last year, but my daughter wasn’t interested in him then.
“…The tabloidy-nature, the jingoistic overtones, the lack of professionalism, the vilification of foreigners, the blatant racism, the hit-jobs they do on the US military, the general anti-American tone to every story relating to the United States, the failure to fact-check, the presentation of opinion as fact…”
How is this different from the average American newspaper?
Why not post this comment on IA (as well as your response to Kevin’s ajumma piece)?
Rhesus:
I almost took up your suggestion, but when I clicked on the Comments box, I read the pugnacious challenge written in bogus skinhead dialect and saw how pointless it would be.
At first I thought the guy was not suited to Korea, but now I wonder if he just might be in his element.
His finely-developed feelings of “han” didn’t spring up overnight, and I doubt they arose only after he got to the country.
Have you always this in your face attitude, IA Kevin? You reminds me of an verbal Hooligan or, wait a minute, a angry Korean ajeoshi. Rude, aggressive language can be a weapon like a sharp knife and I guess you have warm blood steadily dripping from your tongue. No offense, buddy, please don’t give me one of your cold, cynical verbal showers.
Have a nice day at Costco’s.
Save your pop-psych evaluations for abused K-girls and quit wasting them here. At least with them you might get something out of it.
You are one nasty western supremist. People like you make me think of throwing up and defecating simultaneously, the common american collective, exploitive trash mind.
No, IA Kevin, my sole ego is Sugar Shin and not BS. I was afraid of receiving a shower like BS after posting my comment.
IA Kevin, where has your love gone? It’s not in your postings…
“No, IA Kevin, my sole ego is Sugar Shin and not BS. I was afraid of receiving a shower like BS after posting my comment.”
Nothing to be afraid of, SS, he’s harmless.
“It’s not bogus skinhead, it’s bogus trainspotter.”
Bogus is still bogus, as you freely admit.
“feel free to drop by me bloog anytime. I’ll leave the toilet seat down for you.”
And your blog is…funny the things you’re admitting to.
