Photos from Occupation-era Japan

Ohio State University Library arranged 14 online photo portfolios for the 2002 publication of J.W.Bennett’s memoir Doing Photography and Social Research in the Allied Occupation of Japan, 1948-1951. Anyway, the photos — taken from one of Japan’s most fascinating yet traumatic periods — are real gems, and anyone with even the slightest interest in contemporary Japanese history should give them a good look-over. The site also includes some really interesting journal entries.

(Hat tip [and much thanks] go to Neilbarker’s Seoul for finding those)

Wow. Thank you. I’m going to have to blog the OSU site in several parts. It sure takes me back to my earliest childhood memories from not too long after those photos were taken.
