Despite the arguably racist cartoon, I’m honored that someone at the Hankyoreh is reading some of the English-language Korea blogs, and especially honored that they would quote some of us concerning something as important as the impeachment issue. Still, I wouldn’t exactly call selected quotes from me, the Infidel, Yangban, and California Sojourner a fair slice of foreign “netizen” opinion.
And I know selected anonymous posts from the Guardian (UK)’s online forum sure as hell ain’t.
Still, if you’re reading this, Hani — thanks for the love.
UPDATE: I think the Infidel was less than impressed, but damn, ain’t that a sweet ass!
For the Yangban those of you who are Korean impaired, the selected quotes were…
From California Sojourn:
I tell you that we are certainly looking at an interesting few years for the Korean peninsula here. I wonder what the Norks are currently thinking about the whole deal.
From the Infidel:
This is a Gracie maneuver, falling on the mat to watch an opponent blunder. But South Koreans are the ones who lose, because the people desperately need a government. The people, abused for so long, have locked themselves into their television stares and soju soaking, awaiting the results of the cockfight in Seoul. This is entertainment for slaves, not political action.
From the Yangban:
While at least one Anglophone Korean blogger worries about this being the first step of a coup, we are in the middle of a constitutionally-regulated procedure that will be played out over the next several weeks or months. There is no reason for anyone to hit the panic button.
Well, Andy, the Korean version came out, “While some Koreans point out that this is the first stage of a coup d’etat, in my view, that’s not the case at all, and there’s no reason to panic.” Anyway, from the Yangban, they also quote:
If the OOP got a majority in a parliamentary system, we would basically have the ‘Prime Minister’ of Cholla and Seoul’ running the country. It wouldn’t be any better under the Grand National Party.
From me, they took:
“The impeachment vote was stupid and immoral, but unfortunately, it was legal”
And:
Good conservative that I am, this does concern me, because I trust neither Roh, the Uri Party, or the people who back them. But then again, if I had voting rights, I’d be voting for Uri in April.
Strangely enough, they also lifted Toolboy’s comment from that post. The Korean version reads:
“President Roh has made too many enemies… At least with Park Chung-hee and Kim Dae-jung, they loved being president, but Roh doesn’t seem to enjoy the position.”
Congratulations, Toolboy — you’ve been paraphrased by the Hankyoreh Shinmun.

It seems like every time a Korean cartoon shows a black person, they have a spear in their hand…
Brian
Perhaps the cartoonist doesn’t care to know better. More likely, the cartoonist is too racist him(her)self to actually make friends with black people.
why do I feel that I’m writing about a KKK radical or Jesse Jackson?
“Arguably” racist cartoon? How about very racist!? I just visited the site five minutes ago. Now I’m pissed. Maybe I should draw some racist cartoons, too– see how they feel about that.
Kevin
Those of us who dont speak Korean are extremely confused. Translation please.
That’s why I mentioned “The effects of the pot calling the kettle black.”. I’m glad to read Mr. Shin’s sharp criticism.
Oh, by the way, if some of you enjoy watching and listening Hannity and Rush, you become the last man who discusses racism. Hmm Hmm, Marmot, do you still think the Fox News is a “patriotic” cable channel?
Congratulations Marmot, anyway. ??? ???.
Since when am I fit to print (online) outside of my own site? Strange…but hey…I’ll take it.
And yes…that cartoon does seem a bit over the top.
*Whistles* Taking a better look at that cartoon…I gotta admit that DAMN is that just a bit racist…
Unless there is something in the bubbles giving better meaning to it…
There really is no need for the “spear chucker” pic.
For a paper of its “progressive” background, you’d expect better.
Anyone want to give translation a shot? Unfortunately, I don’t have my Korean dictionary on me.
the picture’s racist? well, yes it is racist but why would any of you object? you don’t object when a type like infidel likens koreans to ‘chlidren’, do you? you all remember when you white folks used to say the same thing about black folks, don’t you?
wait a minute, you mean, card carrying members of the radical right are concerned about blacks? you mean, fans of hannity and nick africano got the best interest of african americans in mind? or maybe, just another angle to slam korean folks. i’ll bet that’s it.
and infidel is married to a korean (go figure), got a little jefferson in him, don’t he?
“the picture’s racist? well, yes it is racist but why would any of you object?”
Well, let’s see, Mr. Shin. Perhaps because it is racist. And no, it’s not “an angle to slam korean folks.” Not every criticism made — especially ones directed at particular media institutions (in this case, the Hankyoreh) — represents an “angle” meant to tar an entire nation.
BTW, there is a flip side to that argument — one could, of course, go to Asian-American blogs that bitch (rightfully, IMHO) about racism in America and say, “Yes, it is racist, but why should you object, because in Korea (or Japan, China, etc.), people do x,y, or z.” It’s not an argument I’d ever use, because what occurs in Japan, China, Korea, or Botswana for that matter is generally irrelevant to what happens in the United States. Or, to put this another way, just because Japanese society may be racist has nothing to do with (and certainly doesn’t excuse) racism targeting Japanese-Americans in California. And visa versa.
Now, as far as the Infidel is concerned, I don’t target some of his posts (some of which I do find rather odd, especially for a man married to a Korean) because they are his own personal views expressed on his own personal site. I’m sure he disagrees with a lot of the stuff written on this blog, but he respects the fact that blogging is, after all, a rather personal activity, and if you have disagreements, you’d best express them politely or not express them at all. In fact, I can recall only one time did I actually fisk another blogger’s work, and that was Josh Marshall, and even then, I tried to be as polite as I could. And frankly, his blog’s so big that he’s almost Big Media anyway, and Big Media’s always fair game.
Poiboy,
While you have matured over the last year and seem to be posting under only one ID these days, I take offense at your last post here.
You calling anybody racist is pure crap. Some of the other IDs you post under express horribly racist opinions. Don’t remember your seaofjapan posts? What about USFK 5150? Want me to repost some of them?
So, poiboy, it is OK for Koreans such as yourself to be racist. The problem is when expats point it out, right?
First of all, thanks Marmot for upholding the better values of the blogosphere–honesty, sincerity, and decorum–which is more than I can say for Hankoeryeh, which can’t even quote well or activate its links. One of the main functions of the Internet, and what keeps it coherent, is the linking of websites. Without that, the Web is nothing more than a private printing press.
Next, Shin Jong Il. What a surprise! This guy certainly gets mileage from his few bits of knowledge and propaganda. South Korean education might not crossed all it’s Ts, but this guy uses it efficiently. First, and this is no way an excuse, but blogging is not writing for publishing. It’s about halfway between party talk and a first draft. That’s whay makes the writing so exciting, because the political decisions that go into editing are not as apparent.
Because of time constraints I often do not strictly identify the sources which start me on the way to an argument. I also, like many other people, including you, commit numerous informal fallacies, including ad hominem and lumping disparate individuals into indiscreet groups. This is a logical problem; not a political problem. But then, at no time since I’ve been in South Korea have I ever heard or read anything which leads me to beleive most South Koreans writers know the rules of informal logic.
Racism is a very specific charge. It’s a body of propositions which include a normative and a descriptive component. Descriptively, there’s the proposition that humans are divided by race, and that, normatively, all qualities, like intelligence and productivity, can be evaluated according to this criterion. I am not a racist in neither sense. As a Caucasian with Native American ancestry, that would be very difficult, especially considering the notorious reputation Seminoles had for harboring and intermarrying with escaped African slaves and renegades from the region.
I presume that individuals are the starting point for all political questions. I look at basic needs first, and then specifics later. As someone raised as a Lutheran Christian, I also tend to view individuals as a metaphysical concept, too, with an autonomous mind. Shin obviously has swallowed a lot of Marxist and post-modern scepticism about both these notions, but both still have presumptive value for me. When I speak of a group labelled ‘South Koreans’, I refer most of the time to the average citizens of this ROK from whom I get information on a daily basis. I do not attribute opinions to them, because after a days’ work I often cannot remember every name, but I can remember the argument or insight. I have this awful habit of forgetting names, because I concentrate more on faces and arguments.
I compare “South Koreans” to “Americans”, and I make the following comparisons. “Koreans” do not have enough information, about the sort of things people need to live comfortably, like finding a good doctor, the cheapest price, or the best job, which “Americans” take for granted. “Koreans” do not defend themselves against the abuses other “Koreans” inflict upon them, whereas “Americans” have developed a litigious society based on adversarial relations and conflict resolution. These two aspects alone give me hours of quiet rage daily. “Koreans” rarely find or go looking for information about making decsions, trusting others. I’ve trained my wife now to look for second opinions from doctors, search the Internet for prices, and talk to everyone just to get information, all things she was reluctant to do before I met her.
When it comes to politics, there are “Koreans” like my wife, and elites or blood-sucking vampires, Seoul, aristocrats and oligarchs, etc. This is like the federals or Washington for Americans. I don’t award superiors or politicians any respect. There is surely enough documentaion and scholarship on South Korean and Choson leaders, which would indict them in an court of public opinion. One of my favorite Korean movies is “The Story of Chunhyang”, because it depicts what I think is the Korean problem. Unfortunately, and this is where I differ with my wife, I disagree with the resignation, which views the differences between corrupt aristocrats and the People as insoluble and permanent. I can be proud of numerous episodes in my life where I did not just give up and accept my fate. Unfortunately, I do not always see or hear this from “Koreans”. My wife I can bolster; students I can urge. But “Koreans” I can do little more than rant. I challenge my wife everytime she starts surrendering, and she is much more assertive now. Unfortunately, most of the time with me, but she can function in American society if she had to.
My wife and her notions are very much a part of how I view “Koreans”. Isee the same failings and strengths. I get frustrated when the weaknesses appear, and appreciative when I find something valuable. Unfortunately, blogging is more relaxing than adulatory, so the rants come out before the praise. Its also a way to con myself that if I write everyday, I will return to my larger, finished projects someday. It’s a record of the raw material behind the finished, publishable theories I hope to disseminate in the future. Writing is also my favorite means of communication, so I tend to relax my inhibitions and trust that readers will devote the same amount of time reading as I do preparing. There’s a welath of reading and experiences behind each word; most Koreans donot have access to the reading. I doubt they realize how significant their own words are. That right there is why I get so annoyed.
And then , there’s Shin! Most of the time I think you are the argument against cribbed notes. Or, allowing grads with no teaching ability into primary education armed only with theory. Or, the argument against notion that everything is political. I resent the implication my wife is a slave and that I’m in any position to exploit her. I’m not an adulterer, either. My wife made a very gutsy move to marry me, and I respect her decision. I’ve met many women, in this country and in America, afraid to challenge their beliefs, but my wife is not one of those. Before she met me, she hated foreigners and even participated in anti-American protests. I accepted her as an individual and gave her respect, which her previous boyfriend did not. I rant at her, too, because I’m an unbearable prick and perfectionist. But she always reminds me what is important: trust, communication, and loyalty.
Note to the Hanky:
The next time you want to draw an African, think “Kofi Annan.”
Note to anyone else:
As much as some people want to believe otherwise, being conservative is not the same thing as being racist.
Ah, yes, the Big-Nose Waygooks and the Spear-Carrying Black Man. The Hankyoreh is pretty much a cartoon itself.
Gator, come on, now. The “pot calling the kettle black?” Who is the pot to which you refer? I don’t watch Rush, or read Ann Coultier, for that matter, and while it may make for good rhetoric to associate your debating partners with their lowest ideological denominator — we rightists (including myself, on occasion, just for the fun of it) occasionally use the same technique against the left (and as I need not tell you, the Chosun Ilbo is the reigning champ as far as this rhetorical style is concerned) — it’s not the most intellectually honest way to pursue a point, and frankly, I’m surprised a guy of your obvious intellect would resort to it. Besides, of the people who have left comments on this issue, not all of them are “white wing crackers,” so to speak. Brian’s very much a man of the left; Kevin Kim is, well, “off-white” and hardly a raving right-wing nutball; and Infidel’s politics are firmly centrist.
But thanks for the congratulations.
PS: The thing that surprises me the most is that while I do bust on the Hani from time to time, they have done a fairly good job of highlighting issues related to undocumented workers in Korea — fine progressives that they are. Why the same paper then stoops to such depictions of black people is simply beyond my ken.
Shame on you Gator for not only defending, by praising Shin Jong Il. I guess blood is thicker than logic.
“Poiboy,
…
You calling anybody racist is pure crap. Some of the other IDs you post under express horribly racist opinions. Don’t remember your seaofjapan posts?” - kimchipig
Hello folks, here?쨈s the second Shin, Sugar Shin. So, kimchipig, now Mr. Shin Jong Il is your alleged “poiboy”? And why the hell should a Korean or Korean-American post as “seaofjapan” - don?쨈t you see the discrepancy of it all? Don?쨈t try to chew the balls of the Koreans at this place, Miss Piggy, they?쨈re not your Kermits. Try hard to become a house-broken pig and do not act like a refractory wil broar, kimchipig.
BTW (very off-topic), where the hell has Kermit his pubic hair? If you can answer, maybe someone will acknowledge your verbal vomit that you use to leave. Yummy.
To Mr. Shin Jon Il, you should know that I like your comments, but the one above from you was personally insulting against Infidel. Hey, I don?쨈t wanted to comment about this shitty Hankyoreh cartoon, which is obviously racist, because I was too ashamed of the half-naked spearman, who had to function as a representative for Africans. And this fuckin?쨈 bold question mark in his thinking bubble was only the cream on top of the cup of bullshit.
Hey, to all Caucasian dudes, don?쨈t mind about the big noses, they?쨈re a equivalent counter-balance of the “chinkish” Mongol eyes in worldwide use to caricature East Asians.
“Shin obviously has swallowed a lot of Marxist and post-modern scepticism about both these notions, but both still have presumptive value for me.” - Infidel
Have you also meant me, Sugar Shin, with this sentence, because you have accused me of being an Marxist and compared me with the early Malcom X before his attendance of the Nation of Islam. Not everyone, who has studied the theories of Karl Marx becomes automatically an Marxist (every politically interested mind, even the die-hard anti-Communists, should study the works of Marx, to get a sufficient knowledge about the topic). Marx himself was hugely influenced by the dialectic theories of Hegel, so if dudes like me admire dialectic thoughts, it
). If someone wants to criticize or change the “average Korean”, he/ she should follow some usefull rules to reach the summit. First abnormal praise (even blunt lies) to show someone?쨈s deeply felt affection and respect for Korea and AFTER the little ritual the thumbscrewers can be put into work, never in reverse mode. Why should the “average Korean” give a fuck about the opinion of an foreign outsider of his/ her society, who doesn?쨈t follow these rules?
doesn?쨈t make anyone a commie. It?쨈s pretty confusing for me, if anyone adresses one of the other commenters only as “Shin”, while there are actually TWO Shin?쨈s spooking aorung at Marmot?쨈s place. It would be nice, when the commenters would explicitly adress “Shin Jong Il” or me, “Sugar Shin” to differentiate. I don?쨈t read your blog, Infidel, so I can?쨈t affirm Marmot?쨈s announcement, that you are in fact a centrist. I?쨈ve only seen your picturebook of your wife and you in Hanbok garb (one little suggestion: the simultanity of the movements while performing the k?쨈n cheoll with your wife before the seniors is important!
To slim (with his not so slim-margin of errors in his comments), are you sure that gator is a Korean or has a drop of Korean blood in his veins? I don?쨈t read his blog (if he has) either, so why don?쨈t you take his comment as a expression of opinion of a free human being without any ethnical connotations and tags, that you put on him to allegedly degrade his 2 cents?
To Marmot, I have the feeling, that you are very selective in correcting/ challenging some of your commenters about their verbal missteps (i.e. Shin Jong Il?쨈s offense against Infidel in special), but I?쨈ve missed your attention in my discussion with the Australian Neo-Con folk Paul Edwards and his extreme right-wing, violent and prejudiced posts against the South Korean political landscape (as an example his suggestion to “sacrifice” or flatten Seoul to teach ME a hard lesson without thinking about the other Korean folks who would have appreciated his political stance against the DPRK). Where have you then been? Can I delete my “moderate” before the “Republican”, in my assessment of your political stance? Are you the Wolfe with a diplomatic “sheep-sounding” tongue towards Shin Jong Il or me? Or have you only ignored or not noticed the whole discussion?
“South Korea is free. It used its freedom to make immoral choices. Don’t expect anyone else to give a shit about what happens to your capital city when you have an attitude like you do. Honestly, having Seoul destroyed has it’s advantages. Some people need to learn the hard way. It is probably the quickest path to being de-communized. It may make you choose your brothers on a basis other than race in future.” -Paul Edwards
and
“I’m really pissed off now. If I’d known this before… Ok, here’s what to do:
1. Withdraw troops.
2. Tell South Korea if they send any food or anything else, aiding and abetting our enemy, we will bomb both the ships that the goods are on, as well as bombing Seoul as a bit of payback for all that flag-burning.
3. Using the carriers, destroy any ships or planes that leave North Korea. Bomb the oil pipelines too.
4. Don’t bother wasting bombs taking out the North Koreans at the DMZ, let them teach the South Koreans a lesson about the do’s and don’ts of gang rape.
5. Don’t bother landing forces, this is tailor made for air power. We’re not interested in gaining territory as imperialists. If the South Koreans get a bit of imperialistic spirit, they can take the territory themselves.” - Paul Edwards
and
“My message is directly to quavering Americans:
If New York is destroyed by a nuke, because you listened to racist South Koreans who are more concerned for their North Koreans, because of their race, rather than treating them as hostile commies, then you will personally be responsible for negligence. If you put Seoul infrastructure and a relatively small number of US soldiers (trained and armed to the teeth) lives above the lives of the (defenceless) citizens of New York, then you have seriously misunderstood the purpose of having an army, and you will go down as the most naive, the biggest bottom-burps, in the history of civilization.” - Paul Edwards
You haven?쨈t said a peep about this stuff (which are excerpts of Edwars in the discussion involving Infidel, Shin Jong Il and me with him), Marmot, because you thought it was ok to post such things? And now you?쨈ve found your (I must admit, chalk-smoothed) voice to speak to Shin Jong Il?쨈s insulting post against Infidel. How about shielding a little bit the butts of your yellow fellows here at your place, when other fellows breach the rules of politeness? I don?쨈t want to sound to harsh and disrespectful to you, and it?쨈s your right to decide which fingers you want to slap from time to time, so take this only as a nagging question. If I?쨈ve breached the rules of politeness to you myself, than you can show me the doors and give me an ass-kick.
“Cogito ergo sum.” - Descartes (French smartass)
Poiboy,
Man, you have waaaay too much time on your hands. I suppose being umemployed and unemployable has a lot to do what that.
Mr Sugar Shin, of course the post was offensive to infidel, it was meant to be. i don’t make any apology to him for that, but i will offer it to you and mr marmot. i apologize if i offended your sensibilities.
PS any thoughts on the last part of sugar shin’s post, mr marmot?
“To slim (with his not so slim-margin of errors in his comments), are you sure that gator is a Korean or has a drop of Korean blood in his veins?”
Gator is quite Korean, and he’s got a great blog. Actually footnotes his posts from time to time. Just thought I’d clear that up, and direct you in the direction of the Gator’s work.
Now, as far as the rest, you’ll notice that, for the most part, I leave the discussions here in my comments section alone, unless someone takes issue with something I wrote in the initial post and/or directly asks me for my commentary on a point of contention (this is obviously not a hard and fast rule). Occasionally, I’ll interject in particularly interesting discussions or when some one raises a point I feel I should address. Many of the longer discussions I don’t even read after a point. Besides, I don’t have the time and inclination to respond to each and every silly and/or offensive post I get, and it’s not like I need to “shield a little bit the butts of your yellow fellows here at your place” — you guys do a good enough job of that on your own. Besides, if you’re able to evoke a response like the one I made toward Shin Jong-il, it’s because you’ve made a good/interesting/thought provoking (or simply provocative) comment that warranted a decent response (not a “slap”) on my part.
The really stupid/silly ones I ignore or erase.
How about some of you blokes trying to do something actually helpful than just sitting there bitching and whining amongst yourselves? Have you even considered e-mailing the reporter and telling him about this insensitivity to racism? I bet he doesn’t even know this is racist. The racism in Korea has a lot to do with plain ignorance and insensitivity just as much as sense of superiority and/or real hate. Here’s the mail I sent the guy. But since he can obviously read English, you don’t even need to write in Korean.

Woojay — the Hani has apparently already been told (I’m not going to say by whom).
I’ve seen so many of these cartoons that it doesn’t bother me much. As I pointed out, I was simply pleased the Hani reads these blogs. This was the first time anything I’ve written has been quoted in the Korean language press, so I don’t feel like bitchin’ up a storm about this one particular cartoon.
The discussions I’ve been having with the two Shins, on the other hand, is of a more general nature (i.e. does the “kettle” have the right to call the “kettle” black?) that does not actually have to do with the cartoon, per say. Unfortunately, that conversation distracts from the real point of the original post, which was simply to point out that we got quoted, and that was pretty cool.
Another point that I didn’t raise was that all the bloggers quoted are Typepad users, which is another reason for all you guys on Blog-Shitty to make the switch.
Ok, I’m a white guy with a Korean daughter by adoption. I do listen to Hannity and Limbaugh when I can. I don’t make assumptions based on a person’s skin color, but by their words and actions.
I’m going to tell you all something about my Brenda that should make ALL you ethnic or “FOB” Koreans shamed. Brenda doesn’t like associating with other Koreans because of the way she has been treated by Korean who aren’t Americanized. From before Brenda could talk, she realized she was different from the rest of the family. In public places, Koreans would interact with Brenda until they saw who her parents were or discovered Brenda didn’t speak Korean, then it was like Brenda wasn’t even there. She even got this treatment at Revrend Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral. She has felt more discrimination from Koreans with family than anyone else, including racist blacks that call her “Chink”.
So get off your high horses and learn to get along.
One more thing, during the LA riots, I called the Korean Language radio station, KBLA am, and offered to open my home to any Korean family burned out and homeless from the riots. They aired that offer and the offer for me to help guard their homes or businesses. I had a very meanacing looking shotgun configured as a hand cannon.
You look really small when you hide behing a fake name, a computer, and your racism.
I’m going to tell you all something about my Brenda that should make ALL you ethnic or “FOB” Koreans shamed…
Just out of curiosity, what does “FOB” mean?
Jesus, I’m so linguistically out of the loop…
FOB = Fresh Off the Boat. That is how the Orange County Koreans I’ve met make the distinction between Korean who act according to Korean customs and Koreans who act according to American customs.
FOB has been applied to every immigrant group to come to America.
“FOB” means “Fresh Off the Boat.” Hardly a phrase used by Caucasians only. I’ve heard Asians of all different backgrounds use it regularly to make fun of themselves when screwing up English or with what they’re waying.
Needless to say I don’t get all the jokes…
Brenda has a funnier way of self-putdown. She says that she’s secretly blonde.
Sugar Shin: Thank you for your comments. yes, my wife and I operate on two speeds, but we do practice before the rituals. Interestingly, my family gave me a chance recently to lead a family memorial service. All commented I did well.
Shin Jong-il: Not only are you banned from my site irrevocably, but, begging the Marmot’s forgiveness, let me tell you, in good American fashion, that I hold you in contempt as a human being. Not only have you insulted me by raising your spurious claims on another person’s site, not mine, but you have insulted a person who cannot defend herself online. I don’t mind if you’re rude to me,. Actually, I prefer that sort of honesty from one with such a lack of propriety. You are exactly the type of educated person, no matter what ethnicity or nationality, whom I despise. You use your intelligence to sow discontent and misery.
I apaologize to the host, but I will not take this reprehensible thing’s noises quietly..
Thanks Mr. Marmot for your description of your maintenance habitude to your comment sections.
Back to topic: congratulations for your blogger appearance in the Hankyoreh Shinmun.
Mr. Shin Jong-Il and Mr. Infidel, there is no need of an apology or thank to me, I don?쨈t want to take anyone?쨈s side. It?쨈s a business between you two, but I think, the table-cloth between you both is already cut to pieces. I?쨈m in a Hippiesk harmony-thirsty mood now [yeah, LSD is stimulating my synopses right now :)], why don?쨈t we all take off the clothes and go straight to San Francisco?! Peace.
you’re banning me from your site? how dare you. are you an american? you’re trying to silence me because i don’t give your face. the dispariging remark was about you, not your wife. the only thing i said about her was that she’s married to you, and that’s she’s korean. you were the subject, not her. so, don’t give me your faux-indignation, ok?
you, sir, are a communist.

i won’t let my wife hang out with ex-pat koreans. all they do is gossip and try to start trouble in other people’s relationships. they have gone out of their way to make her life hell because she is younger and prettier and married to an officer. it’s amazing how petty they are.
