The six party talks have ended, which is great for me, because now I don’t have to bother with blog posts like this, i.e. posts I really don’t want to make because I could hardly care less about negotiations with the North Koreans, but because of the international focus on the talks I feel obliged to make anyway. Frankly, I haven’t read the “chairman’s statement” yet, although from looking at the Korean pieces over at Yahoo! Korea, the participants were able to agree on a “non-nuclear Korea,” which I thought we agreed to in 1991, but then again, I guess I don’t follow these things as closely as I should. Anyway, the Americans seem happy enough with the way things turned out, although I think this statement is the most accurate things I’ve heard coming out of Beijing in the last four days:
“The event has exceeded my expectations,” the official told reporters on condition of anonymity. However, he added: “The devil is in the details.”
Yeah, no shit.
