Video footage of North Korean gulag

A reader sent me this MSMBC piece with some video footage from a North Korean prison camp that was supposedly smuggled out of the country and shown on Japanese TV. Here’s how Reuter’s describes the video:

The footage on Japan’s Fuji Television Network, said to have been smuggled out of the communist state, showed poorly dressed men and women laboring in snowy fields.

Prisoners in drab grey uniforms, the men with their heads bared and the women wearing only scarves despite temperatures said to be well below freezing, harvested cabbages and hauled heavy loads in the infamous Yodok 15 prison camp.

I watched the footage, and frankly, I wasn’t all that shocked — there are places in South Korea that look just as dead in mid-winter (especially along that stretch of train track between Weonju and Bonghwa — Christ, there are some shitholes out there). Still, take a look at the video yourself and draw your own conclusions.
