Why won’t this story just die?

The Lee Seung-yeon “comfort women nude” saga continues. In fact, for those with a keep interest in this mess, OhMyNews has a whole section at their Hot Issues section dedicated to it — enjoy. Anyway, just to give you a break down of where we stand now:

  • lee_seungyeon_crying.gifLee visited a home for former comfort women in order to apologize for being an insensitive tart. In fact, to the right, you can see a photo of her sobbing like the little bitch she is, getting berated by former comfort women. How did her public repentance (minus the haircut) go? Not well:

The seven elderly women present at the scene rejected Lee’s words firmly stating that tears were not what made apologies sincere and demanding that all existing rolls of film and photographs be destroyed.

“Do you know what kind of pain we go through? I can’t sleep at night. This is something that I can’t even talk about with my family, do you understand?” Kang Il-chul, 76, said in response to Lee’s apology.

Kang also pulled out a note she had prepared and read down a list. “Get rid of all the photographs. Repent for the pain you’ve caused. Do not ever let this happen again. We will forgive you only if we truly feel that you mean it.”

  • And this brings us to our latest development. Now, any reasonable human being at this point would have stuck a fork in the project, burned the negatives, and started to pretend really hard that this whole affair never happened. But Netian Entertainment simply refuses to let the project (and this goddamned story) die. Today, he goes out and announces that he wants to put on a “preview of the first series of footage shot on the Pacific Island of Palau.” Check this out:

Netian said it would like to hold a preview screening for about 100 people, including representatives of civic groups connected to the “comfort women,” distinguished personalities, and the general public, so that the first series of footage can receive impartial and proper evaluation. If the company’s “sincere intentions” were not recognized at that preview, said Netian, it would publicly destroy the originals of all the photos and film right in front of those attending the preview.

In addition, the company said, “If, through the preview, our sincere intentions are recognized, we will use all the profits made through this project to help the former ‘comfort women.’” It said that neither the date nor the place of the showing has been set, and those would be decided after gauging public opinion.

You know, I thought their previous promises to stop this project sounded awfully similar to North Korea promising to end its nuclear program.

  • nude_model_association_head_2.jpgNow, in perhaps the most bizarre twist, Ha Yeong-eun, head of the Korea Nude Model Association (!), called on Lee Seung-yeon to immediately stop this project of hers. The head of the illustrious organization had previously condemned Korea’s “nude syndrome,” during which a number of entertainers were (and still are) stripping for big bucks. According to her, it’s only a nude if there’s something artistic about it. And she would know — since 1986, she’s shed her clothes for the camera more than 3,000 times. I was able to dredge up one of those 3,000, which you can view here (not work and/or Chosun Ilbo office safe).

THis is an issue that *should have* gone away quietly. BUt with the entertainment side milking it for all its worth, and the comfort women (of course) not accepting their apology… it’s dragging on and on… quite the pathetic spectacle.

http://www.domai.com, a site featuring tasteful nudes, is looking for submissions of non-Caucasians. If you know anyone who takes publishable nude photos of Korean women, I think they’d be welcomed and would serve the world by educating non-Koreans’ eyes about Korean women’s beauty. (Unfortunately my girlfriend won’t even let me take pictures of her for my own viewing.)

I have to say, this whole episode has been one of the most friggin’ bizarre items in Korean current events that I’ve ever seen. Surreal doesn’t even start to describe it.

Although, I do think your coverage on the issue has been first-rate.

Was it really necessary to “fuzz” out her nipples?

I must admit Marmot, you have some stupid idiots who contribute to this blog. One wishes he were God so that his own fury and wrath could come down on the simpletons.
But what I really wanted to say was in regards to the much venerated Korean women as we understand them. They are nothing more than unattractive dangling limbs without a sense for memory. My wrath and fury to their libertine nerve endings. But then again it aids me in affirming my faith in misogyny for these litterbugs
