Over at the Chosun Ilbo, Lee Seon-min, described by one Korea blogger as “one smart cookie,” wrote an absolutely outstanding piece which attempts both to explain the rise of nationalism in Northeast Asia and warn of the potentially explosive friction that may arise as nationalism in Korea, China, and Japan becomes increasingly strident. The “official” English version should appear on tomorrow’s Digital Chosun, but those with the ability to read Korean should take a look at the original version first. I’ll add my own thought on this piece, which I found both insightful and disturbing, when I have more time to blog tomorrow.

Definitely do an update when the English version comes out!
All well and good - except he steers clear of discussing the source of Korean nationalism.
Also, the phenomenon is not limited to East Asia: Hindu Nationalists have the Indian parliament (and count Vajpayee among them), the Australian Liberal Party under Howard is as ant-foreigner as the Aussies have been since the 70s, and France and Germany collectively want to dominate Europe and blame Americans for all that is wrong in the world. America also seemed to be heading towards nationalist fervor in the wake of 9/11; fortunately this appears to have been merely wholesome patriotism mixed with shock news clips.
It’s a global sickness.
‘…wholesome patriotism…’
two of bush’s closest advisers just put out a book in which they envison a world dominated by a us willing to use any means neccesary to bring such a horror about.
that don’t sound so wholsome to me, lil man. and yes, it’s a global sickness.
