Kim Gi-duk does it again

in Korean Culture

nude_nun.jpegFilm director Kim Gi-duk has decided to move on from filming women sticking fish hooks in their privates to making movies about weonjo gyojae — high school girls who enter into sexual relationships with older men, usually for money and/or gifts. And yes, just to prove his point, the poster for his latest movie, “Samaria,” shows actress Kwak Ji-min — all 19 years (Korean) of her — topless and sporting a nun’s veil. Yes, she was a high-school senior when that photo was taken, meaning yes, she was a minor. The Chosun Ilbo reports:

Another movie insider said that Kwak was quite concerned about posing for such a poster before her high school graduation in February, but forced herself to do it anyway because she believed in its artistic quality. Out of consideration to the actress, the poster will not be released for use in theaters until after her graduation ceremony.

That didn’t stop the Sports Chosun from running the poster in their paper, however (or me from posting it on my blog). For comparison’s sake, here’s a picture of Kwak, courtesy Naver.com.

PS: The movie has been invited to the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival in February. When it will open in Korea, I don’t know.

Didn’t Kim Go-duk direct the official movie submitted to the Oscars in Sping, Summer, Full, Winter,…and Spring?

And The Isle, along with The Coast Guard is on my rental list. So fish hooks and a border guard who kills mistakenly….what a set up…

Do I understand correctly that the girl was a minor when she did the film and posed for the pic? Isn’t there a problem or concern with ethics, morality or at least a legal issue there that remains unexpressed?!

I guess her parents don’t mind her performing as a underage movie prostitute either.

I’d say…

I like the nun picture more.

Cheers!
