So, are we ultimately going to see a battle between South Korea and North Korea that comes down to beauty? Because as much as I believe might can be right, beauty is a lot easier on the senses.
I thought these were six-way talks.
Imagine the United States ambassador coming in and saying, “We can??р꽓t see why China and North Korea can??р꽓t work this out. We and the other three parties are here trying to facilitate an agreement between the Chinese and North Koreans. If the Chinese simply would open their minds and act wisely, it??р꽓s clear the North Koreans would stop their nuclear program. The United States has no natural role in all of this, but we hope China and North Korea work this out soon. Good luck to the two parties. Thankyouverymuch. Bye.”
The words would be shocking in the diplomatic fantasyland of Korea, but don’t be surprised if finally they are spoken.
There was a reason to bring five nations into the talks over North Korea’s nukes. North Korea wants a one-on-one relationship, with itself as the extortionist and the United States as the deep-pocket victim. “You pay us, or we hurt you,” Kim Jong Il is saying.
Well, no, “dear leader.” That approach didn’t stop your nuclear arms program before, and we doubt it will stop you again. And besides, there’s nothing left in America’s deep pockets. We’ve spent that money removing another totalitarian dictator.
The official and semi-official statements that really do come out of this crisis reveal the delusions of many in North and South Korea. If we in the United States weren’t distracted with other battles, we’d be creeped out by the whole thing.
But reality will surface. I expect that, within the next year, the United States will take the position that China and North Korea are the principal parties in these talks.
