No squid for you!

The Squid Nazi cometh - South Korean troops preparing for service in Iraq have been told that squid and samgyeopsal parties on the Euphrates are right out. Courtesy the now comments-free Korea Times:

“Hold the Koran sacred,” “Do not eat ham, squid and pork,” “Keep neutrality in sectarian strife.”

These are some instructions in a guidebook the top state spy agency on Friday gave to South Korean troops preparing to leave for Iraq. The troops may leave as early as April next year to help rebuild Iraq.

Titled “A Guide to Operation in Iraq,” the 210-page book provides useful pieces of advice to help the 3,000 soldiers familiarize themselves with the Islamic society.

The guide stresses a successive operation in Iraq, with a predominantly Muslim population, starts from understanding and respecting the Iraqi people’s religious spirit.

It warns soldiers not to wear clothes with words and pictures that might denounce Islam or the Koran, the Muslim holy book. They are also advised not to eat or give ham, dog meat, squid and octopus, or pork, in front of Iraqis.

Dog meat? Well, apparently Iraq is not Marmot-friendly.

Note the distinction made between ham and pork. Which confirms my suspicion that Korean “haem” has nothing to do whatsoever with the Western pork leg delicacy…
