Suicide bomb plot at Korean embassy in Kabul

This just in at Yahoo! Korea News, via Yonhap - apparently, the Korean embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, has received word of a credible suicide bombing threat and has responded by withdrawing some of its staff and moving the rest to safe places.

There is no word as to why the Korean Embassy is being targeted, but speculation points to the ROK’s involvement in the multinational peacekeeping force in Afghanistan and the ongoing debate in Korea concerning its planned dispatch of troops to Iraq.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Shin Bong-gil, “Of the three (three!) people working at the legation, some have been been rushed to another embassy in a third country, while the rest who remain to protect expat Koreans and to communicate with the Afghan government have been moved to a safe place.”

According to Yonhap, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Office received word of a suicide bombing threat against either the Korean Embassy, the ROK Army in Afghanistan, or the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) that was to take place between November 16 to 26, and relayed warnings to the embassy.

There are currently 205 Korean engineering and medical troops stationed in Afghanistan, and about 40 Korean civilians - KOICA (basically, the Korean Peace Corps) members, NGO operatives, reporters, etc. - reside in the Kabul area.

According to the Foreign Ministry, it may consider plans to evacuate the remaining embassy staff and expat Koreans depending on the situation in Afghanistan.
