When the fine young men doing their patriotic duty in the South Korean riot police (seen above in my banner image) aren’t wooping up on leftist student demonstrators, radical labor unionists, angry farmers, even angrier right-wing militants, and anyone else disturbing the peace and public order of this great Republic, they are apparently forced to endure emasculating mascots like the one on your right. This one’s courtesy the 2nd Company of Kangwon Province’s Finest, but all the regional riot police companies have ‘em. Personally, I thought Podori was annoying enough - but dress him up in riot gear and there’s something seriously wrong.

Now, all we need is a cutesy Hanchongryon mascot to have the makings of a new Korean animated series. Every episode, they hold and skip, realizing the joys of reunification.
Sorry, it’s early morning cynicism.
As if the lack of respect from the people they are supposed to protect and serve isn’t bad enough, the cute mascot is the final indignation faced by Korea’s boys in blue.
I think the Ministry of Unification needs a mascot… perhaps a cute guy handing out envelopes of cash…
