National Flowers and Fascism on Film

Saw the Korean political thriller The Rose of Sharon Has Bloomed (Korean: ??´?¶??™”?½???´ ?”¼???????????¤) for the second time last night (nope, there was nothing else on). Based on a famous novel (no, I haven’t read it) by Kim Jin-myeong, my second time through the film simply confirmed how I felt about it the first time - that you’d have to go back to Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will to find a clearer example of fascism on film.

Coincidentally, I understand the movie was released internationally under the title Korean National Flower.

PS: And while we’re on the subject of films, would someone PLEASE tell me what the fuck John Wayne was doing playing Genghis Khan?

This was a Howard Hughes project that was not released until Hughes died. The sad part is that the movie was filmed within range of an atomic testing area - most of the actors and crew died of cancer, including John Wayne himself.
