Water on Taiwan

Andres Gentry writes bluntly about Taiwan:

It is unlikely, given the choice, that Taiwan would vote to join China. It is unlikely that it will vote for representatives who would negotiate such a unification. With the gradual assimmilation of Mainland Chinese descendants into Taiwanese society, the gradual disappearance of their 1949 dream to return to where they came from (but not where the other 85% of the population came from), and the fracturing of the party (KMT) which had represented their point of view, the world is going to have to accept that Taiwanese do not want to be part of a country, China, they view as foreign. Taiwan is not a part of China. Period.

I’m inclined to agree.

True or not, the two things that matter are this:

The mainland Chinese are, to put it mildly, inclined to disagree.

The ultimate decision-makers that will determine whether or not there’s a war are not the two nuclear armed powers that would be drawn into the fight.
